}:Bastiath is arriving with his rider:{ Osherith said, shifting to
give the other brown space to land.
**Let him know N'tan can come in.** R'kede shifted the hides with wing
formations he had been staring at. There was nothing new to learn, he
knew, but it still felt like something he should do to prepare for
Threadfall. Realizing his glass was empty, he stood to pour himself
some redfruit juice.
Never one to be graceful, Bastiath landed with a thud to drop his
rider off. N'tan himself slid down with much more grace, giving
Osherith a wave of greeting before heading in. "You wanted to meet
with me?" The tone itself wasn't rude, but the abrupt launch into
business flirted with it. Bastiath was eyeing Osherith from where he
waited, slightly disappointed by his personal assessment the new brown
was bigger than him.
**Well, he's direct,** R'kede thought. Directness could be useful in
some interactions, although not all. "N'tan, thanks for coming. Grab a
drink if you'd like," he gestured towards the pitchers of redfruit
juice and klah, "and take a seat." He settled himself in the green
armchair, leaving the blue one for N'tan. "I'm trying to get to know
everyone in the Wing as quickly as I can. I can't lead a Wing if I
don't know the people, and dragons, in it. So, you came to the Weyr
after Thayan Peak?"
N'tan did help himself to a glass of juice, though he didn't fill it
all the way, as if either he wasn't really a fan or he thought the
conversation might be brief. He settled easily into a seat, however.
"That makes sense," he said approvingly. "Yes. I can't abide the cold,
so it made sense to stay in the area. And I heard you came in from
Windswept Islands?" He made it a question although the rumor mill had
been whirring. "Were you looking to transfer, or was it just the
opportunity?"
"I did," R'kede confirmed. "I transferred there soon after it opened.
And, I initially came here for a Wingsecond role. I had already been a
Wingsecond for Turns, but there was a change in the Wingleadership
and... let's just say I didn't think I was the best fit to mentor the
young bronzerider who was assigned the Wing." He shrugged, not wanting
to gossip. Last he'd heard the bronzerider was still Wingleader, so he
supposed things were going well enough. "When this position opened up,
N'vanik encouraged experienced brownriders to apply and I couldn't
help myself."
"How about you?" R'kede asked. "Any interest in leadership? To be
honest, with the open Wingsecond position, I'm paying particular
attention to brownriders in the Wing." He hoped N'tan would appreciate
the straightforward language.
"No, honestly. Five Turns ago? Maybe. I'm too old a canine to be
learning new tricks at this point, though." N'tan shrugged, seemingly
unconcerned by that admission. "A good wingsecond is someone who can
eventually move on to lead a wing, not someone likely to throw out
their back and wind up retired." His smile was a little
self-deprecating. "But it's good you're looking at the browns. The
Weyrleader wasn't wrong to put out a call for a brown Wingleader, I
just think he should have pushed for more browns in the 'second roll,
first. Always better to promote a familiar face when you can."
"You're not old at all," R'kede disagreed. There couldn't be more than
ten Turns between them. However, he certainly wouldn't give the
Wingsecond role to someone who didn't want it. "Who would you
recommend then?"
"We've got E'ben of course," N'tan said, "but I'd like to see some
younger brownriders get the chance to get a taste of leadership while
they're young- gives them hope and something to focus their energy on.
We don't have any of those in our wing, though, aside from Ç'pier but
he's too new even if you could ignore everything else about the
situation." He was clearly assuming R'kede had the full backstory.
R'kede nodded in thought as N'tan spoke, running through his mental
list of all the brownriders in the Wing for what felt like the
hundredth time. He decided not to comment on Ç'pier, who he still
needed to learn more about. "Thanks for sharing your thoughts," he
said, his tone genuine. "Anything you think I should know about you,
or the Wing?"
"There's a lot of conflict right now. People don't like who they're
flying with. I hope you knew you were transferring into a mess." N'tan
gave him an apologetic look. "But good luck."
R'kede couldn't help but smile broadly in reaction to N'tan's negative
assessment of the situation. From their brief conversation, the other
brownrider didn't seem to have a very optimistic outlook on life. It
was true that Cyclone Wing had more than its share of problems. But,
the new Wingleader thought he was up to that challenge. "Well, N'tan.
Maybe the change in leadership can shake things up. I won't say no to
some luck though. Thanks for meeting with me. I'll see you in drills."
N'tan nodded politely and excused himself.
