Did You Know

The evening brought a cool breeze into Dolphin Cove's weyrbowl, though it was hardly felt in the depths of the lower caverns. Ilthralos sat cross-legged on the bed, Ithianne nestled against his chest, half-asleep and protesting her tiredness by shaking herself awake reach time her little head drooped. Across from him, Vianne was sitting up, her dark eyes bright with excitement as she twisted a loose thread on their blanket between her fingers.

“And did you know,” she said, barely pausing for breath, “That even though the dragons talk and play and learn like children do, they'll always have really bad memories? They won't really remember wing drills unless the riders do it every day."

Ilthralos huffed a soft laugh. “I know, love.”

She blinked, momentarily thrown off course. “Oh. Right.”

“I love how excited you are." He said gently, "I grew up here. I've been around a few dragons in my day. It's good to know what sticks from the teaching ballads, though. "

Vianne swatted at him playfully. “Well, it’s all new to me.”

“And I love hearing about it,” he said, shifting the child in his lap so he could take her free hand and squeeze it. "We're learning about dragons at home too, aren't we, Annie?"

Ithianne straightened up and half sang, half baby-burbled along with him,

"Smallest green, a dragon’s length,
Swift of wing, yet light of strength.
Most in number, quick and keen,
Four times yearly, they rise like queens.
Blues are faster than the rest,
Turning sharp and flying best.
Bronzes, browns, strong and wide,
Their might and skill keep the Wings in stride,"

They both cheered as they finished, and Ithianne happily clapped her little hands at a job well done.

The energy in Vianne's eyes dimmed slightly. She hesitated, pressing her lips together before finally saying, “What happens if I Impress?”

"_When_ you Impress," Ilthralos clarified, "Well, dragonriders relinquish succession rights and ownership outside the Weyr. That technically includes our marriage contract."

"Technically?"

"Well, weyrmating is basically like getting married. There's just no contact involved. Folks can split up without all the legal issues. I think it requires a notice to the Weyrwoman or Weyrharper. My foster mother left her weyrmate and had to give notice to the Headwoman so she could assign us new quarters. But, and I hope I don't sound too sappy, but I'd be very happy to stay married. If you don't find a dashing bronzerider between now and then, that is."

It was her turn to huff a laugh. "And your parents don't mind watching Ithianne?"

"Of course not. Mum's still a foster mother, she loves having her first grandbaby. And she says the baby gets along really well with the other kids. We have lots of support here."

Vianne nodded, then leaned in to kiss him. “I love you, Ilthralos.”

“And I love you.” He pressed a kiss to her temple. “Now, tell me more about what old R'lor is teaching you about dragons. I think I might have forgotten.”

She laughed and swatted at him again.
