Description: I'mrei and K'don attend a party together with their fellow dragonhealer apprentices.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 4, day 16 of Turn 12
Notes: Follows "DCW: Infatuation"
We don't know who Yethber is, but she's probably in a lot of trouble.
K'don had fretted for longer than he would have wanted to admit over
what he was going to wear to this party. He wanted to look stylish.
Effortlessly stylish. So much so that he actually put in quite a bit
of effort.
Despite how little time he had remaining before the party, he
nevertheless flew between to find himself a brand new and effortlessly
stylish (if he did say so himself) outfit _and_ a shave and a haircut.
He even let the barber talk him into a bit of scented aftershave and a
manicure-- and his nails did look rather amazing. (If he did say so
himself.)
So, at last, with just barely enough time to spare, he returned to the
place where he was meant to meet with I'mrei before the party so they
could show up at the same time.
"Hey!" K'don smiled with relief to see that I'mrei was, in fact, still
there. "Sorry. Am I late? I hope you weren't waiting long."
I'mrei nearly swallowed his tongue at the sight of K'don.
**Slow down,** he commanded his galloping heart.
}:Please do. I'd rather you not expire this very moment,:{ Eismuth contributed.
"No, no, I wasn't waiting long. You look... Yook _great_," I'mrei said
with that breathy infatuation that could only be described as puppy
love.
K'don beamed with a very distinct puppydog look of his own. It was
always rather obvious that he delighted in such praise, but now, it
was for something he was trying very hard to do and not at all sure he
had done well.
"Thank you so much! I was a little worried I might have overdone it."
I'mrei only threw him another smile as they began walking toward the
apprentice quarters in the lower caverns. From down the hallway,
thumping music could be heard. "Oh boy, it sounds like Yethber invited
a full band. How he squeezed them into such a tiny space..." I'mrei
laughed, but his blood sang with excitement.
"Oh..." K'don was suddenly very nervous. He could not imagine calling
in enough favors to get a band to play at a party. He was not sure he
knew enough people. "Should I have brought some wine or something?"
"Of course not," I'mrei said, waving off K'don's worry. "You brought
yourself, looking like _that_, which is a gift in itself."
K'don smiled brightly, a touch of color flushing into his cheeks.
"Well, let's hope everyone else thinks so, too." He paused a moment to
take in what I'mrei looked like, and then he smiled again. "You look
nice, too."
And that was it, that was all it took for I'mrei to melt. **He noticed
me,** he sighed inwardly.
Then they were at Yethber's door, which swung open to reveal the
crammed pack room with the band blaring. "Oh my!" I'mrei laughed as he
tugged K'don with him into the din of people laughing and chatting and
dancing.
"Wow!" K'don was almost a little overwhelmed, there was so much going
on. But he drew closer to I'mrei and focused on him to drown out the
loudest of everything else. "I've never been to anything like this
before..."
"It's great, right?" I'mrei called loudly above the music. "Do you
want to dance?"
"Only if you don't mind that I dance like a goofy dork!" K'don laughed back.
"That's the _best_ kind of dancing," Im'rei insisted as he pulled the
brownrider with him into the throng of jostling people.
It had been a very long time since K'don really felt like he could
just completely be himself without worrying what someone would think.
Or, as 'very long' as a time can be when one is sixteen, anyway.
But he felt safe with Im'rei. He could have fun with Im'rei. And he
danced like a goofy dork.
The greenrider loved this new side of K'don. If it was possible for
him to be even _more_ enamored than before... then he was!
"It's a million degrees in here!" Im'rei panted with a smile, a line
sheen of sweat adding a dewy glow to his skin.
"There's like a thousand people in here!" K'don laughed. It was
simultaneously stifling and freeing. It was hot and tight, but it also
meant that no one was really paying attention to him. No one but
Im'rei.
Suddenly, every light in the weyr flicked on, the music halted on a
jarring odd note, and all eyes swung to the door. There, standing in
the doorway, was one of the Headowman's Assistants.
"What is the meaning of this _noise_?!" The woman shrieked, looking
absolutely absurd in her silk hair cap and fluffy robe.
Im'rei's hand reached down and snatched K'don's. "Quick, out the
back," he whispered, adventure still lighting his eyes.
K'don held tightly to Im'rei's hand and struggled to hold in his
giggles as they escaped along with no few others. Poor Yethber...
"Go, go, go!" he whispered.
The greenrider was breathless with giggles as he and K'don raced from
Yethber's, hand in hand through the corridors. Caught up in the
adrenaline, the excitement, Im'rei turned and impulsively kissed
K'don.
And K'don was a bit stunned. He stopped. He was still smiling, but. He
was surprised. Not quite sure. He held onto Im'rei's hand. But.
"Oh," Im'rei blushed to his roots. "I-I'm sorry. I should have asked.
I was just... caught up in the moment."
K'don was still beaming. He gently touched Im'rei's shoulder.
"Nobody's ever kissed me before. I... I would have said yes." He,
himself, had never understood what it was like to want to kiss
someone. But... he understood what it was like to want to make someone
happy. And he wanted to make Im'rei happy. "May I?"
Im'rei's heart squeezed. "Yes."
K'don gently touched the side of Im'rei's face and then leaned in to
tenderly kiss his lips.
Flags were waving, confetti was exploding, his heart was dancing a jig
- _all_ of the things were happening inside I'mrei as he surrendered
to K'don's touch.
Im'rei's lips were soft. They felt nice against K'don's. He let the
kiss go on for what he was pretty sure was an appropriate amount of
time before he broke it, leaned back, and tilted his head.
"Was that all right?"
The young greenrider was sure he had grown wings himself. He would no
longer need Eismuth to fly. He could fly whenever he kissed K'don.
"That was more than all right."
K'don beamed with joy. He could not recall ever having made another
person this happy. It was food for the soul.
"Can we do it again?"
"We can do it _all the time_," I'mrei said, and then laughed at how
eager he sounded. "Okay, not all the time, but you know what I mean."
K'don giggled along with Im'rei and then kissed him softly again.
"Well... I don't have anywhere else to be tonight."
I'mrei's heart threatened to expire.
"Me either... You want to come to my place?"
"I'd love to."
