R’kede thanked the drudges who brought snacks and drinks to his
office, leaving everything on the low table in the middle of three
armchairs. Along with fruit and crackers, there were some small
pastries. He couldn’t resist popping one in his mouth, smiling at the
burst of berry taste that filled his mouth when he bit into it.

His hair was still wet from the quick bath he’d taken after drills
were over and he’d changed into a bright green shirt, beige pants, and
sandals. The Wing wasn’t fully working as a team yet, and he still
felt sometimes that he was just playing at being the Wingleader, but
they were improving. Too hungry to wait for his Wingthird and
just-promoted Wingsecond to arrive, he filled his plate and took a
seat.

Denebith dropped A'khal off at the Wingleader's office and immediately
left again, intent to curl up on his own ledge for a well deserved
nap. A'khal, however, strolled in like he owned the place. "Started
the party without us, huh?" He drawled, his gaze raking over R'kede
with exaggerated slowness before he flopped into the opposite chair,
reaching over to fill a plate with pastries.

"This is almost worth the bruises from 'drills today. Whose idea was
that last formation? It looked good on paper, but we flew like whers
with vertigo."

“There’s plenty for all of us.” R’kede waved his hand at the abundant
food. Then, slightly sheepishly, “Yeah, that formation didn’t work at
all. I was hoping it was something that could help on windy days, but
I might need to abandon the idea completely.”

E’ben was still standing, stacking food on his plate. “I don’t think
we should abandon it completely,” the brownrider reasoned. “It just
needs… _work_ and lots of practice. Maybe take the browns off the
outer edge of the formation and put the greens there instead. They
ride the currents better.”

R’kede tried to imagine it. “The greens might struggle to stay in
formation, but it’s worth a try. Maybe we should wait a sevenday or
two though; make it less likely someone has a dip in confidence in
themselves, or in me.” He felt he still needed to prove himself to
some in the Wing.

"Gives the greens more room to work, though. The daredevils would like
it. Shards, _I'd_ like it if the bottom hadn't dropped out the way it
had. Almost needed my brown pants." A'khal added. Denebith had dropped
like a stone and they'd blinked back into position, but for half a
second his guts had been in his throat.

“We can keep strategizing about this next sevenday,” R’kede said,
after eating another small pastry. “Right now, I’m hoping we can talk
big-picture and decide how we want to divide up responsibilities for
the next few sevendays. With all of us pretty new to our roles in the
Wing, I’m hoping we can take some time to figure out how we work best
together; maybe shuffle things around a bit in the first few months as
we decide what works best. However, as a start, I’d find it helpful to
hear one thing you’re very interested in taking the lead on, and one
thing you’d really rather not do. Then we can go from there.”

"I'll continue with the weather reports, of course." A'khal said. "I
like doing it. And I can continue coordinating the blues and greens.
I'd _rather_ not be the one to manage the sweep schedules."

“I don’t mind coordinating the sweep schedules,” E’ben said. “I also
don't mind mediating smaller wingrider disputes that don’t require
Wingleader authority, if that helps take something off your plate,” he
said to R’kede.

“That all sounds good to me,” R’kede said, taking notes. “E’ben, you
spoke convincingly this morning about our newest riders needing more
consistent mentorship. I assume I should work with Ç'pier. Which of
you wants to learn to sign a bit and work with B'lyse?"

"I can. He'll be nearer to me in formations, anyway, and I want to see
how acrobatic Azureth can get if we can get his rider to loosen up a
little." A'khal said with a shrug. It's not like they needed to sign
much when they were airborne, anyway. "We should keep an eye on V'tian
and Z'kylo too, while we're at it. Both are young and new, and they're
both struggling with their greens." He considered a moment as he
popped another sweet into his mouth. "And we need to keep a closer eye
on the girls. Alina, Iskara, Cosani. They've been making mean faces at
Ç'pier and I'm wary of what they end up doing."

“E'ben, can you keep an eye on V'tian and Z'kylo? And, I’m reluctant
to preemptively take any action. But, we can use this new mentorship
program as an excuse to shift Ç'pier up by me during drills and
Threadfall. It might be naive of me, but I’m hoping that things will
slowly cool down over time.”

“Absolutely,” E’ben took a small notepad out of his front shirt pocket
and jotted down V-I-Z-I-A-N and Z? X? - K - I - L - O - W. He would
look up how to spell them from their Wing roster later. He was still
memorizing all of the names.

“What else…” R’kede looked down at what he’d jotted down earlier. “I’d
like to be able to visit any injured riders and dragons after
Threadfall, but probably won’t always be able to get to them quickly.
So, can we just be in contact after ‘Fall to coordinate visits to the
infirmary?”

“Maybe a rotation? I’ll take next threadfall, then A’khal could, and
then you, Wingleader. What do you think?” E’ben folded his notepad and
tucked it back into his front pocket.

“I like that,” R’kede said. “I’ll still want to visit everyone, but
it’ll take the pressure off me to get to the infirmary quickly if I
know one of you will be there.” He grabbed some grapes from the table.
“Ok, anything else we should check in about today?”

"When are you getting us in the water, R'kede?" A'khal asked with
barely contained amusement. He wasn't a fan of the games in general,
but he'd learned to humor it. Surprising their new wingmates would be
extra icing on the cake. And maybe he could casually invite a certain
bluerider down to watch.

“I want to give everyone a chance to get used to me before introducing
water activities,” the Wingleader said. “However, here’s what I’m
thinking for a first water drill…”
