Alina

Alina

Cyclone Wing finished drills and Alina wandered into the dining cavern soon after in search of a snack, when something blue caught her eye. Something blue with tiny little yellow stars. And Alina saw _red_.

She marched over to the table of greenriders from Volcano Wing and pointed at the young woman wearing the blue tunic. _Her_ tunic. Her _missing_ tunic, the one that she'd so painstakingly mapped out the constellations on. "Where did you get that."

Opallia, who had never been good at reading the room, beamed happily up at Alina. “I bought it at a local market. Don’t you _love_ it? I mean, the stars are a little tacky, I admit, but it’s perfect for day-to-day wear.”

"The stars are _not_ tacky and you certainly did _not_ buy it at a local market!" Alina hissed. "That is _my_ tunic."

The greenrider's mouth dropped open into a perfect 'O' and her big blue eyes grew even larger. "I did _so_ buy it at a local market. What are you trying to insinuate, Alina? That I'm a thief?" Her voice was getting loud and shrill.

Alina arched an eyebrow. "I'm not insinuating anything."

A gasp spread among Opallia's friends as their eyes flicked back and forth between her and Alina.

Opallia's chair screeched loudly against the stone floor as she pushed up from the table. She was tall and slender and used her height to look down her nose at Alina.

"Listen here, Alina," she put heavy emphasis on 'Ah-LEE-naaaahhh', "just because your weyrmate runs around here like the Weyrleader's stooge with his little sword, don't think you're going to start pushing the rest of us around, too. I bought this tunic fair and square with marks that I earned."

Alina narrowed her eyes. "It's my tunic, Opallia. I put the stars on, and _somehow_ it went missing a few sevendays ago. If you think I'm going to let you parade around in _my_ clothes and not say anything, you are sorely mistaken."

"You can say whatever you want, but the shirt is _mine_, and you know what, I think I'll wear it _every_day_." Opallia's eyes narrowed in return.

That absolute _bovine_. "Fine. We'll see what the Headwoman has to say, then. I hope you like midnight watch duty."

"What I really like is _stargazing_," Opallia said as she pinched the front of _her_ tunic between thumb and forefinger and fanned it a little.

"You wouldn't recognize a constellation if it smacked you between the eyes." Alina spun on her heel and left, doing her best to ignore the titters and snippets of shocked voices around her. Opallia was a liar and a thief, and there was absolutely _no_ way that she was going to let that awful woman have _her_ tunic.
