“Can you believe it, Ryvankal? Or whatever your new name is. We’re _bronzeriders_,” By’ler crowed while feeding a fresh piece of chopped meat into Reviath’s gaping jaws.

“Can’t believe it, really,” R’vkal answered as he popped a piece of meat into Indrath’s mouth. “What’s yours named?”

By’ler thumped his new lifemate’s flank proudly. “This is Reviath. Yours?”

“Indrath,” he answered with a beaming grin. “Not sure what name to go with for me. R’kal? R’vkal? R’nkal? Never thought much about it.”

“Wuhrin-kle,” By’ler said, testing the name out. “Yeah, I wasn’t sure either but I didn’t have a choice. Reviath called me ‘By’ler’ before I even had a chance.” He shrugged. Dragons choices were hard to argue with, especially when Reviath was so confident, already, about his decisions.

“Indrath didn’t call me anything. Just ran into me.” But now that he had heard By’ler say one of the name options, he didn’t like it. “Are they supposed to know our names? Know he knows his. Didn’t think to introduce myself.” He looked at his little bronze, who looked up at him adoringly. “Parents named me Ryvankal. What do you think my new name should be?”

Indrath chewed thoughtfully, which was impressive for a hatchling. After a second bite, he blinked a few times, and said, }: R’vkal. Keeps enough of your old name but says you’re mine now. :{

“Huh. He says R’vkal. Think that could work.”

“I was hoping for By’lle myself, but,” the handsome Weyrling shrugged his shoulders. “I suppose I’ll learn to respond to By’ler at some point.” The Far Island transplant studied Reviath’s darkly burnished hide. There was only a hint of a bronze sheen beneath the darkness. From a distance, he probably looked the same shade as tree bark. By’ler didn’t care. Reviath looked _perfect_ in his estimation.

It was a relief, impressing bronze, By’ler thought, recalling the conversation he’d had under the stars with Oriene. Oriene!

“Oh, damn, I just remembered. Oriene.” He looked around. “She didn’t impress?”

R’vkal craned his neck, looking at the newly made riders. “Don’t see her. Don’t think so,” he said with a tinge of sadness after a moment searching. “Hopefully next time. She’s been here a while. Be good to see her Impress too.”

By’ler knew she’d been hopeful. He hated the thought of her disappointment, but R’vkal was right. She could try again next time.

A blue Weyrling near them started dry heaving as he was trying to feed his blue the bloody meat that had been chopped for them.

“Oh, geez. How does a dragon choose someone like _that_ but not Oriene?” By’ler said with a hint of disgust.

It was a good question and one that R’vkal didn’t know the answer to. Not that he was a fan of handling bloody meat either but at least he wasn’t squeamish. “Don’t know. Hope they don’t puke during Threadfall. Make it hard to focus then.”

By’ler’s nose wrinkled. “Can you imagine? Not only having to dodge writhing silver spores intent on eating the flesh from your bones, but _also_ having to dodge his puke?”

R’vkal’s expression became a thoughtful wince. “Not a great image, that one. Maybe we talk about something else. Your family come to the Hatching?”

“Nah, I don’t have any family, just my foster sister, Lyani. She’s a greenrider here.” He’d seen her face in the stands, cheering him on with a glass of wine in each hand. “What about you?”

“My parents are here. Somewhere. Probably see them at the feast. I’ll introduce you. They’ll like that. Getting to meet the other bronzerider of the clutch.”

“A feast sounds amazing right now. I was too nervous to eat before the Hatching,” By’ler admitted. The thought of succulent fish, fruits, _cheese_ (his favorite), and perhaps dancing with a beautiful girl, was enough to cause the newly minted bronzerider to check and see if Reviath was ready to go to the barracks.

}:Yes. I am _quite_ full.:{ Reviath’s belly was so round By’ler couldn’t imagine how he would get him from the feeding room to his box in the barracks.

R’vkal nodded. He had also been nervous to eat before the Hatching. He went to answer but then spotted two familiar figures approaching. “Looks like my family is coming to find me instead,” he pointed out. As they neared, proud smiles on their faces, R’vkal said, “Da! Ma, meet Indrath. And my…well, guess you’re my classmate? Seems so. My classmate By’ler.” R’vkal’s mother immediately cooed over little Indrath while his father went to clasp By’ler’s hand in a smith’s iron grip.

By’ler knew how to be on his best behavior around parents, even though he had none. His foster mother had been a gem, though. “Well met, sir,” he said, shaking the smith’s hand.

“Ravan. Two bronzes in the clutch and my boy gets one! You two are going to look out for each other, right?” Ravan boomed proudly.

“Oh, absolutely, sir. We might as well stick together.” So far, R’vkal had seemed an alright sort and they _did_ both Impress a bronze.

Ravan clapped By’ler on the back. “That’s what I like to hear! Tiny things, they are.”

“But adorable,” R’vkal’s mother cooed. “Look at that face.” She was holding her hand out to Reviath.

Reviath seemed perplexed for a moment but then he dropped his chin into the woman’s hand. By’ler barked out a laugh at the sight of the bronze dragonet, looking like an overgrown canine pup in that moment. “Perhaps you’ll need to stick around for Weyrling training, ma’am. I might need your help.” She laughed at that.

“You’ll both do just fine,” Ravan said without any doubt. “Here, let me help you get them fed. Heard they’re ravenous to start. Can’t have you losing fingers, can we?”
