“By the way, congratulations on another fine clutch.” Z’kim lifted his glass in salute. He was reclined on one end of N’vanik’s couch while the bronzerider was leaned back on the other. “How many is it this time?”
“Forty-one. Loseth does good work,” N’vanik said with pride. “You’re coming to the Hatching, right?”
“Of course. Barring Threadfall or something like that.” Z’kim’s brow creased with a thoughtful frown. “Can we still have a dance?”
“Yeah. Why wouldn’t we?” They’d danced together at the last few Hatchings, just for fun and to raise eyebrows.
Z’kim shrugged a shoulder and took a sip of wine. “I was wondering if it might be too much for you now that things have changed.”
N’vanik’s stomach tightened. “Just because I don’t want you to tell anyone doesn’t mean I’m afraid to be seen with you in public or something. I’m not _ashamed_ or anything like that, I just . . . I don’t know how to explain it to anyone. I don’t even understand it myself.”
Z’kim leaned over and put a hand on his arm. “Hey, Nik, it’s okay. I know you’re not one of those repressed holder boys.” He smirked. “Not anymore.” Though he was dying a little that he was sleeping with a Weyrleader and he couldn’t talk about it.
N’vanik snorted, some of the tension seeping away. He knew how much it pissed Z’kim off to have to deal with holdbred attitudes about men having sex with each other. “We could spice up our dance, actually. Really give everyone a show.”
“Yeah?” Z’kim liked where this was going.
“Most of the talk about Dolphin Cove has been about murder and shit lately. I want to be in that Printer Hall rag for something _fun_.”
“So you don’t mind everyone talking about us?”
N’vanik moved closer and slid a hand up Z’kim’s chest. “I _want_ them to. I just don’t want them to _know_.” The bronzerider swallowed against a nervous flutter. “Not . . . not yet, at least. I just . . . need some more time to wrap my head around all this.”
“How you suddenly noticed your best friend is incredibly hot despite having mind-blowing sex with him for Turns after flights?”
N’vanik laughed. “Yeah, that part.” He wondered what it would have been like if he’d always felt this way. “You remember when I came to you that once after Loseth lost a flight?”
Z’kim snorted. “Faranth’s first egg, as if I could forget.”

Month 12, 1196, Dream’s End Weyr
Loseth dropped away, growling in frustration as another male claimed his prize. N’vanik staggered back, sending a glare at the man sweeping the lovely greenrider into a passionate embrace. She should have been _his_. As he turned away, a woman reached for him. “I’ll take care of you, bronzerider.”
Pretty face, long dark hair, big breasts . . . “Yes.” He pulled her into kiss and she tugged him out of the flightroom.
A flight. Chasing a green. Dragonlust. Maybe . . . He pushed the woman away. “Not this time.”
She frowned. “Changed your mind?”
“I . . . I guess.” This was a terrible idea.
The woman sighed and stepped away. “I’ll find someone else, then.”
**Loseth.**
}:_What_,:{ the bronze snapped, seething with his loss.
**Ask Warroth if her rider is at home.**
}:_Why_?:{ he snarled and lashed his tail.
**Just do it.**
His mindvoice still had an edge, but he was much more polite when bespeaking the green. }:Is yours home?:{
After a short pause, Warroth said, }:Yes.:{
As soon as Loseth relayed the message, N’vanik said, **Come get me.**
}:Why?:{
**Just do it!**
Then the bronze caught a glimpse of what his rider intended. }:Oh . . .:{
A moment later he landed in the Bowl and N’vanik quickly mounted. No straps, but N’vanik gripped Loseth’s neckridge for the short ride up to their ledge. Z’kim was waiting on his side of the split weyr when the bronze arrived. “N’vanik? Didn’t Loseth just chase?”
N’vanik slipped off his dragon’s neck for a jarring landing. “Yeah.” Z’kim looked . . . normal, but N’vanik still wanted to try. He crossed the ledge in a few quick strides. “Came to you.”
Z’kim titled his head and then his eyes went wide as he took in N’vanik’s state. “You . . .”
“Inside.” N’vanik planted a hand on his chest and pushed him into the weyr.
A smirk curved the greenrider’s lips. “See, I told you"”
“Get on your knees,” N’vanik growled as he reached for the fastenings of his pants.
“I’m going to let that slide because of the dragonlust.” Z’kim knelt in front of him and helped him tug his pants down.
~*~Brief fade to black~*~
“N’vanik?”
“What?” Hearing Z’kim’s voice wasn’t helping.
“N’vanik, look at me.”
Reluctantly, he cracked open an eye. Z’kim was looking up at him with a frown. “Are you pretending I’m someone else?”
“Uh . . .”
“A woman?”
“Well, kinda.”
The frown deepened. “I’m not so desperate that I’m going to let you _use_ me"”
“No, no, that’s not. . .Can we try again? Maybe if you keep going it won’t be so bad.”
“_Excuse_ me?” Z’kim got to his feet, face flushed with anger.
“No, I didn’t mean. . . I just thought the flight, the dragonlust . . .” He gestured helplessly toward the Weyrbowl. “Maybe it would come back,” he finished in a small voice.
Z’kim’s angry expression turned to confusion and he stared at N’vanik for a long moment. “N’vanik, are you trying to _make_ yourself attracted to me?”
He swallowed, heat rising in his cheeks. “Well, when you put it like that it sounds pretty sharding stupid.”
Z’kim’s eyes searched his. “You really mean it, don’t you?”
N’vanik covered his eyes. “I wanna screw something so bad but I can’t _look_ at you or _think_ of you. It feels weird and wrong, not at all like after the flight. I don’t know how I can want you so much and then just. . . not.” He was confused and felt vulnerable and he _hated_ it.
“Are you . . .” there was a hint of laughter in his voice. “Are you actually upset you don’t find me hot?”
N’vanik dropped his hand and used it to shove his friend. “Shut up.”
“Faranth, you _are_.” He was openly laughing now. “Oh you poor thing. You really are a mess, bronzeboy.”
N’vanik realized his pants were still around his ankles. He hauled them up. “I’m gonna go find a woman.”
“You do that. I’m going to find myself a man.”
N’vanik looked at him sharply. “What?” Z’kim said. “You got me all hot and bothered. I don’t need dragonlust to think you’re sexy.”
“Well, hands off greenrider. Until the next flight.”
“Until the next flight.” Z’kim licked his lips. “I look forward to it.”
N’vanik looked at him. It was just Zeke. Just his friend. But maybe it would be different again the next time Loseth caught Warroth. “Me too.”
~*~End flashback~*~
“You know,” N’vanik said between kisses. “I think I still owe you for that blowjob.”
Z’kim huffed a laugh. “Yeah?”
N’vanik slid off the couch, going to his knees on the thick, soft rug. “Gonna make it up to you.”
The greenrider’s breath came faster as he watched his friend with dark eyes.
Even months into this, there was a strange kind of thrill in doing something he wasn’t supposed to like. Bronzeriders weren’t supposed to like men, and they definitely weren’t supposed to like _this_. But early on in this new phase in their relationship, N’vanik had gotten a notion to try it, and he’d surprised both Z’kim and himself with how much he enjoyed it.
“You look good on your knees, Weyrleader,” Z’kim said.
“You said that last time.” N’vanik smiled in amusement as he reached for the fastenings of Z’kim’s pants.
“Still true.” Z’kim gently gripped N’vanik’s head.
