Ilthralos leaned on his elbows at the edge of the table, watching the dance floor with a bemused little smile as N’vanik and Z’kim all but set the place on fire. The Weyrleader certainly knew how to make an impression. Around them, the crowd reacted with everything from laughter to stunned silence to sidelong whispers behind raised cups.

Ilthralos sipped his wine and then glanced sideways at Vianne. “Weyrleader’s giving the holders something to gossip about for a decade,” he said lightly, nudging her knee under the table. “Though I think I preferred his jacket on.”

“We can smell him from here, eh?” Vianne grinned. She could not, but she was hardly going to complain about the sight of him. “Want to show them up?”

Ilthralos let out a low, surprised laugh; half delight, half disbelief. He turned to her fully now, eyes crinkling at the corners in the way they did when she caught him off guard. He reached over and took her hand, brushing his thumb across her knuckles. "Such boldness. The Weyr has changed you."

“You think so?” Vianne was not sure whether she liked that idea or not. Surely, dancing with her husband was not quite so libertine as to have necessitated a change in her. But then again, she was not sure she would have ever thought to proudly show Ilthralos off at the Hold when her parents considered him nothing more than the only remedy for a disgraceful out-of-wedlock pregnancy and a bastard child.

But she did like it when Ilthralos looked at her like that. Touched her like that. She smiled.

“Then I like it here.”

"Would you have wanted to compete with Lord Corofel's sexy dancing, back home?" Ilthralos teased. "Or Master Aleriand's? Though I may faint thinking of Master Aleriand dancing like that." He glanced around, partially as a joke, because he had spotted the Hallmaster as one of the visiting dignitaries.

Still, he ran his thumb over her hand once more before rising smoothly to his feet, offering her a bow that was more theatrical than courtly. "It's my duty as your husband to dance as long as you aren't embarrassed by it. There's a reason I'm not a harper, you know."

Vianne froze for a moment. Only half a second.

“Part of why I came here was to tell duty to…” She looked around, as though someone might hear or care. “To fuck itself,” she mouthed, as though her parents might magically notice if she gave voice to the words. “Would you, could you dance with me because you want to? Can we dance because we love… to dance?”

Ilthralos tried to hide his smile, tried to remain pleasantly serious. “I would and I can,” he said, voice low and warm. “And I do want to, my love. Dance with me until you are sick of it.”

Vianne relaxed and her smile returned in full. She stood and held out her hand to him.

lthralos took her hand without hesitation, threading his fingers through hers like it was the most natural thing in the world, and pulled her onto the dance floor. The music had shifted to something slower and much less scandalous, at least. Ilthralos didn't have the energy to keep up nor the will to test his wife's newfound independence.

He placed a hand gently on her waist and pulled her in, letting their steps fall into an easy, if a little awkward, rhythm. "Has the feast been fun, at least?"

“At least?” Vianne snuggled close to Ilthralos and swayed with him to the rhythm of the music. “It’s hardly a mere consolation. I’m having a wonderful time with you. All of it.”
