Description: Zy'fen arrives at his new Weyr
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 3 of Turn 12
Zy'fen and Nerenth landed with a slight thump and a backrush of loose
sand, just outside the open end of the new weyr. It had been both
difficult and easy for Zy'fen to decide to transfer away from the weyr
he'd called home since his birth, but he and Nerenth had agreed, it
was the best move. His healing would never be complete unless he could
get away from the memories and pitying looks.
After Nerenth shook off the sand and folded his wings, he carefully
lowered himself to the ground, as low as he could get, and Zy'fen
unbuckled his riding straps then slowly climbed down. The big brown
dragon supported His Zy'fen as much as he could, and Zy gave him an
affectionate rub around his headknobs before looking toward the Weyr
proper.
Once on the ground, Zy struggled for a moment, bracing himself against
Nerenth's neck for balance, then stood straight. When he took a step,
there was a slight wobble, a barelt noticeable list to his port side,
due to the (somewhat ill-fitting) prosthetic attached to the lower
half of his leg. He sincerely hoped it was mostly hidden by his
pantleg, and that the limp would work itself out once he was familiar
with the terrain. Of course, the soft sand made it worse, but
hopefully solid ground would fix that.
Zy stayed where he was for a moment before reaching for his packs,
then -thankfully- wobbled only slightly as he left Nerenth to sun
himself, and went in search of the Weyrleader, whose name he'd been
told was N'vanik.
"Come in," N'vanik called when he heard the knock on his office door.
Zy'fen took a deep breath to brace himself, then opened the door and stepped inside with nary a waver. "Rider Zy'fen and Brown Nerenth, reporting for transfer, sir." There was a barely noticeable hint of bitterness behind the first word, and Nerenth sent his Zy'fen a touch of reassurance to brace him up. }: Anyone would be glad to have you. To have US. :{
"Welcome to Dolphin Cove. Please have a seat." The Weyrleader gestured to the chair, watching the rider carefully to get a sense of him.
Zy'fen nodded, "Thank you, sir." and sat his packs down beside the chair, then took a seat. He couldn't help the slight sigh of relief as the weight was taken off his left leg, which rubbed when he walked or stood for too long. "Did the message from Igen weyr arrive on time?" Zy didn't know what Weyrleader N'vanik had been told about him, but sincerely hoped he could make a clean start here.
N'vanik nodded. "I heard you're here to join Lightning Wing." That was a nicer way of saying Zy'fen had chosen to move after he'd been retired.
Zy'fen wasn't entirely sure what wing the Weyrleader was talking about, but he nodded, guessing there would be an explanation or introduction coming soon. "Yes sir." There were so many things he could say, but Zy kept it simple and to the point. "We're not down for the count yet. But we did need a new start. _I_ needed a new start."
"Understandable," N'vanik said. "You can have a few days to settle in, but you won't be sitting idle. It won't be as exciting as fighting Thread, but we've got plenty for you to do."
Good, that was precisely what Zy had wanted to hear. }:See, I told you.:{ Nerenth just had to add.
Zy'fen nodded and gave the Weyrleader a grateful look. "Thank you. Idleness is exactly what we want to avoid."
"You'll be on sweep and watch rotations -- not everyone's favorite. Transport duty might be a little more exciting. I also need brownriders as escorts for Searchriders. You might have heard we've had some . . . trouble with the holders." What a sharding understatement. "With the attitude some holders have toward green and blueriders, I've been sending them with bronzes and browns to act as a deterent."
As he listened to N'vanik outline what his duties would be, Zy'fen nodded once more, glad he would be doing something at least marginally productive. He had heard about the troubles that some of the Holders were up to. Being mostly bedbound hadn't kept him from hearing the news, thankfully. Taking on watch duty sounded blissful, even if it wasn't everyone's favourite. And acting as a guard for Searchriders? Thrilling. "Some of those Holders need to get over being so hidebound."
That got a soft huff of amusement from the Weyrleader. "That's for sure. Got any questions for me?"
Zy'fen started to shake his head, then hesitated. "I'll just need someone to show me where my weyr is, and where the Healers can be found. I still have some therapy I've been doing that I should tell them about." And he hoped his weyr wouldn't be too difficult to get to.
"The Headwoman will assign you a weyr. I can send up someone from Lightning to meet you at her office, and they can help you get settled and give you a tour," N'vanik said.
Zy'fen nodded and slowly stood up. He was more than ready to get settled into his new weyr -and possibly take a nap- after being shown around. "Just point the way."
