Kavalas didn't even touch the eggs. He hadn't put much thought into it all, really, so certain he was that no dragon would deign to choose him, of all the people on the hatching grounds. Candidacy was a means to an end- a way to remain in the Weyr past the spring thaw, bolstered on the vaguely-assumed possibility that he'd be allowed to stay even after he aged out, since Aegaryn had another turn to stand after him. He didn’t belong here. He knew that. Everyone knew that. There was no family in the Stands wanting to cheer him on.
Everyone but the dragonets, apparently.
He didn't remember if there was a superstition around a green hatching first. She was gorgeous, although on some deeper level he recognized that she looked downright silly, wet and covered in sand and eggshell. Her hide was a deep, mossy green that might brighten when she was dry. She moved like she was already born to be a hunter, and he didn't notice the twitch of his mouth upwards as he watched her awkwardly stalk the candidates she inspected.
He didn't expect the inevitable until she was underfoot, the force of her leaping for him knocking him down. She clambered on top of him before he had the sense to react. He felt her claws rip at the front of his robe and the sharp sting of them drawing blood, but he all he could think was **no, not me, I'll ruin her, she doesn't want this--** before the bond hit him like a barge.
He would have protected her, had he known how, but she was already _there_, fitting to every corner of his mind like she had been a missing piece. She saw every broken piece of him and the fierceness of her love threatened to break him. She didn't understand what she had done, that her one choice had cemented the rest of his life.
}: You're hurting. :{ She said. He could feel the angry rumble in her tiny chest against his, the way she vibrated in his arms. She didn't understand the _why_ of it. How could she?
Kavalas looked up to Aegaryn, resignation clear in his dark eyes. "Guess this is it, then."
“Shit.” Aegaryn muttered. His instincts had flared open like a flame when Sazikoth flung herself at Kavalas’ legs, his hand half-reaching for a knife that wasn’t there, only in his mind, as the dragonet squirmed on top of him, still not entirely believing that she wasn’t trying to attack Kav-- until he spoke to him.
His hand fell. The awareness of where they were rushed back, bringing thoughts, the outdated and feeble and indisputably false thought that dragons weren’t supposed to hurt people being the first one, even though there was blood. Even though he knew in feeling more than sight, Kav was okay; even though he knew all that he did. Now each breath of hatching heat made Aegaryn's chest go cold, tight. His expression shifted, green eyes subtly changed with the grim realization of what had happened-- the change that had happened here.
He was outside of it, and that felt safer to whatever the Weyr had brought into being here. A thread was wrapping around Kavalas before his eyes, yanking the world with it, and all he could do was watch as it lurched off its axis. But Aegaryn would have preferred that, truthfully, to what he actually saw.
The softness on Kavalas’ face, the reality of this dragon having taken their plan-- taken him as her own.
“It’s alright,” he told him with a hand touching his shoulder, despite no way of knowing if it would ever be. Kavalas was bound now, with no way of fighting fact. Finally, reluctantly, Aegaryn looked down at the green pressing against that solid chest, for the first time with curiosity for the mind there, the creature drawn to the man almost as he was. “Is she alright?”
"She's fine-- wha-" Kavalas was cut off by Sazikoth's snout colliding with his jaw as she squirmed, trying to get a better look at Aegaryn. She stared at him, first, then the offending hand on her Kavalas' shoulder. He felt her moving through his mind, trying to understand the meaning of this person that took his attention. She understood only that he was the cause of an ache in his chest, not the _why_, and she decided she must protect Kavalas from it.
Sazikoth twisted in his arms, furious and intent on lunging for Aegaryn-- and Kavalas just managed to catch her around her middle as he scrambled to get back to his feet. She was the size of a wild feline herself and her surprise at being caught around the middle was enough for him to gain momentum and haul her away.
"I'll see you at the feeding buckets, I suppose." Kavalas said amongst flailing wings and angry growling. "I need to get her- ow! Sazikoth!" He nearly dropped her when her back feet scraped his legs.
}: He's mine! :{ She called back after Aegaryn, craning her neck around Kavalas to fix him one last glare. }: Not yours! Not ever! :{
The tension that shot through all three of them like an arrow had Aegaryn reflexively jerking his head back, just missing Sazikoth-- a name that apparently just ran out of Kavalas’ mouth. A voice that Aegaryn immediately and inexplicably understood was _hers_ echoed everything already in her wild eyes, her furious mouth and frantic wings. A declaration of ownership, a fit of rage mirroring Zolta’s unholy wrath to a tee.
Something swiped dangerously close to his face - air, wing, hand, and it had him snarling back at her for an instant, his own declaration ready to be spat out onto the sands. He bared his teeth more out of instinct than intent, the catch and release of muscle almost painful as he forced himself back upright.
And Aegaryn nearly lunged after them.
Sazikoth continued to flail, eclipsing his view of the man still wrestling her off the Sands. But there were too many eyes and the bond was already there, he knew it, sensed it, pulling Kavalas away.
“Yeah… I’ll see you there,” Aegaryn heard himself say over the hissing.
