The ache in his knees had finally reached the point, where Eilomar was forced to seek healers help. He stood in the waiting area of infirmary, mostly because sitting down and then getting back up was too damn hard. "Master Eilomar, how nice to see you again," the Weyrhealer smiled. "Please come on back with me."
"Certainly, Weyrhealer. Shards it's a hot day today," Eilomar replied and followed him. Of course, with his mass, he felt the heat more than others.
"I'm afraid there aren't many cool days, if that's what you're looking for," Pacham chuckled. "In here, please."
"Thank you," Eilomar said and took a seat with a loud sigh of relief.
"It's my knees, they aching. I can't soon bend them, the joints are so sore." "Well, I know you've heard this before, but best way to cure the problem you know is to lose some of that weight you're carrying around," the Weyrhealer said gently. He knew the last thing _anyone_ wanted to hear was that, but it had to be said. "It would take care or at least aleveate a lot of the health problems you've been coming in to see us about."
The harper gave him a rather unfriendly look. "I sing bass, I'm supposed to be big." "Ah, but not _that_ big, Master Eilomar," Pacham replied with finger raised. "Your stomach as no influence on your vocal chords. As your healer I can vouch for that."
"You're probably right," Eilomar sighed. "You may find it hard to believe that I was quite fit as a young man. Back then I could sang whole night without my voice tiring. These days I can hardly manage a one song before I start to wheeze." "Yes, your weight probably does have quite an impact on your lung capacity. But first, we have the problem of your knees." Pacham walked over to the examining table and beckoned him to sit down on it so the Weyrhealer could get a better look.
The master singer heaved, grunted and voiced few complains before he was at the exam table.
"Actually, before you get up here, I'm going to need you to take off your trousers for me so I can see your knees and so you can show me where they hurt."
Eilomar gave him a long stare before he undressed. "Don't try any unprofessional stuff with me," he warned. These weyrpeople had a quite a reputation after all. Pacham tried not laugh outright, but there certainly was a spark of amusement in his eyes. "I'm sorry, Master Eilomar, but I think my wife would hurt me even worse than you could if I did."
The master harper just grunted.
"Now, up on the table and let me get a good look at your knees then."
Eilomar obeyed with few under the breath curses. Moving his large body around was a task itself. "Now lie back and I'm going to move your legs around a bit. I want you to tell me if anything I do hurts your knees, all right?"
"All right," the singer agreed. The Weyrhealer gently lifted first one leg and then the other, feeling the movement of the knee cap and applying gently pressure my moving the leg up, down, left, right. He took note of each grunt and hiss. Finally motioned the harper to sit up. "Well, your knee seems to be strong, considering. But the longer you have that much weight on them the more damage you will do. Arthritis, ligament strains and whatnot. You need to improve your diet, improve your exercise, and lose some of that weight before you end up not being able to use your knees at all, which is entirely possible in the future."
"But eating is one of the few pleasures in life I have still left." "I'm not advising that you starve yourself, Master Eilomar, just that you are more careful about what you eat, when you eat, and how much you eat."
"All right, all right, I try. You healers really enjoy torturing people," the harper complained.
"Only for the fun of it," Pacham grinned. He was not about to let the Master Harper's pessimism spoil his good mood. "Now, I would recommend you speak to a healer who specializes in nutrition. She can help you."
"She?" Eilomar was startled. He was old enough to remember times when females were crafters, but was too used to see them as subservient wifes only. "Yes, _she_, Master Eilomar," the Weyrhealer nodded as he scribbled some notes down on a hide. "This is her name, and on this piece of paper is a prescription for some herbs that will help the pain as well as a poultice that will reduce the inflammation in your knees."
"Thank you," Eilomar grunted. "Any time," Pacham grinned.
