Chandrany

Chandrany

V’tian was lounging idly at the Lakeside, watching Indith swim around and carefully oiling Radiance's golden hide while Sky laid on his other side, already half asleep and sunning himself.

}:Someone comes.:{ Indith told her rider, lifted her head and hummed a greeting to the approaching Chandrany.

Chandrany didn’t want to explode. She really didn’t. Somewhere in her head, she was very aware that it never ended right, never the way she wanted it to; yet the confused jumble of emotions bouncing around inside her resisted containment. V’tian was supposed to be her friend. Or something like a friend, anyway. Somebody she liked, and who seemed to like her okay.

…unless she had read him entirely wrong, and he didn’t like her at all?

Indith’s greeting made her slow a little bit. At least Indith liked her, and that meant something. She didn’t really want to upset Indith by exploding on her rider, and that was enough to quiet the impulsive urge to do exactly that… at least for now.

“Hi, Indith,” she greeted, trying not to sound like she was holding back something, but probably failing.

Gallant landed on the sand beside V’tian, chittering angrily at his clutchmates. It was uncharacteristic of him, but Chandrany’s feelings leaked out of every corner of her heart, and he couldn’t help but feel it.

“You,” she said, turning abruptly to V’tian. “Talk to me about Ç'pier.”

Radiance squealed sharply, startled out of her pleasant half-doze in her person's lap. Her wings unfurled, smacking V'tian in the face, and she hissed, pressing an impulse to _be quiet_ at Gallant. It was her pampering time!

“Faranth!” V’tian yelped, both at the wing-smack and Chandrany’s statement. “... What _about_ him? Yuliuth catches Indith almost all the time, and sometimes I see him other times. Why do _you_ care?” He wanted to know.

Gallant shut up abruptly -- his queen had ordered him -- but kept glaring as much as a fire-lizard could glare, his eyes whirling orange.

The feeling of both subservience and frustration that echoed to her from Gallant only irritated Chandrany further. She crossed her arms over her chest. “Did you know he’s mine, or did you just not care?” She glanced at Indith and then quickly away again. “I get that the flights aren’t your fault and they have to happen. But it’s the ‘other times’ that’s the problem. I thought we were friends!”

“We _are_ friends!” V'tian protested. “Wait… what? What do you mean, he's _yours_? He's been coming over now and then since Yuliuth caught Indith the first time.”

Chandrany didn’t know exactly how long that was, but it sounded like a while, at least. More than just a couple of flights. Ç'pier had talked that way, too. How long had this been going on, and she was too blind to notice?

“I mean, Ç'pier and I are _together_. Don’t tell me you didn’t know.”

“... _What_?” V'tian stared at her blankly. And then his eyes narrowed. “Wait. Since _when_?” Was _that_ why Ç'pier had refused to consider seeing if they could be more?

Radiance, sensing her human's mood change, hissed grumpily. Sky echoed her, and the little queen let go of her clutchmates’ attention.

“We’ve been together two-hundred and five days,” she said, absolutely serious, then, as an afterthought because maybe other people didn’t pay that much attention to her relationships, added “Since just after Panitath’s last Hatching. Over seven months ago.”

She looked him over, trying to decide if he was being sincere. He seemed genuinely surprised. Maybe… he really didn’t know?

…or worse. Maybe he’d been with Ç'pier longer. Oh no. What if _she_ was the other woman?

Gallant settled -- still agitated, but not so much as before -- as Flower flew down to land on Chandrany’s shoulder, nuzzling, trying to soothe.

“...How long have _you_ been with him?”

“Off and on since Turn 12.” V'tian responded, eyes narrowing. “... Month Eight, but… early. Yuliuth caught Indith the first time.” He added, stroking Radiance to soothe the gold. Even if he was starting to feel uncharitable himself. “And he's not _with_ me. He said there was no reason to want more.”

Sky let out a grumpy sounding churr.

Oh good. So Chandrany was _first_. And he told V’tian he didn’t want more.

…somehow that didn’t make her feel any better about it.

“You really didn’t know?” she asked, even though she was pretty sure he was telling the truth. “He didn’t… he never mentioned me? Nevermind. Of course he wouldn’t.”

Without even asking if she was welcome, she sat down hard on the sand. It seemed as good a place as any to have an emotional crisis.

“Do you _want_ to be with him?” she asked instead.

“... No. He didn’t say anything about you.” V'tian confirmed, and slid her a sidelong look. He didn't move away, just kept stroking Radiance. “If he had…” He started, then trailed off, shook his head. “Things would have been… different.” He wasn’t sure _how_, but they would have been.

He took a slow breath, then exhaled. “... I'm Holdborn, did you know that? Some dumb cothold, out… that way.” He gestures vaguely in a direction. “First one in my family, I think. Then of course my little brother Impressed right after me, more or less. --The point is… They had Ideas. And I had Ideas. And Indith… All of that went right out, when she chose me.”

Chandrany looked at him apprehensively. Holders were weird and she only had the barest understanding of their hang-ups -- just the stereotypical ones, anyway. “Was it the ‘green’ thing?”

“... Sort of.” V'tian responded, after a long moment. “I… wanted a bronze. Or, I thought I did.” He stroked Radiance again. “I was so _convinced_. Honestly…” He paused, shook his head. “I was never going to inherit the cothold, so I guess I decided I’d get a bronze and rub it all in their faces. Except that didn’t happen.” He added. “Don’t get me wrong. I love Indith, she’s the best dragon in the world. … My point is, I… I don’t think Indith being green had anything to do with me liking C’pier. Or I _thought_ I did.” he continued. “Sorry… Am I making sense?”

He made a face then. “Maybe it’s the Holder in _me_, but… I don’t think that I like _not_ being the only one, when I thought I was. And… you’re my friend.”

“It must not be the holder in you, because I’m weyrborn and I don’t like not being the only one, either,” she admitted, hugging herself, and honestly feeling a little silly over the whole thing. “But I’m weird, I guess. I mean, I _get_ it -- it’s not fair of me to want him all for myself. I don’t know how to explain it so that it makes sense, either. It’s like… I don’t want him to have to limit himself just for me, you know? He has a right to be with whoever he wants. I can’t own his body any more than I can own his mind. It’s just… I can’t stop thinking about how every time he wants someone else, it means he wants me less. And eventually he won’t want me at all. It won’t even be his _fault_ -- it won’t be him being mean, or cruel, on purpose. Because he can’t help what he likes, right? He’ll just start to realize how much better they are, and whatever he’s feeling about me will just… fade away. Or worse, maybe he’ll start to realize how annoying I am.”

She looked at him, a wry half-smile on her lips. “_You’re_ not annoying. He probably likes you a lot. And… I’m sorry I came down here and took it out on you. The problem isn’t you, it’s me not being able to just… deal with it like any other weyrgirl would.”

“I can’t control who chases Indith. Not… really. Not unless I took her away out of the Weyr.” V’tian told her, with a sigh. “And whoever wins-- that’s really all on her, though I don’t think she’d ever go for the dragon of someone I _hated_,”

He glanced at her, then nudged her shoulder with his own. “Honestly, you sort of did me a favour.” he told her. “I’d have felt like an idiot if I found out everyone but me knew that C’pier was… well.”

A half shrug followed. “I’m… kind of mad, actually.” V’tian admitted. “Not at you! I honestly thought, until you came down here, that I was… well.” He looked exasperated, then frowned again. “I don’t like that he didn’t tell me he _was_ with anyone else.”

Indith rumbled agreement, her eyes whirling faintly yellow, She waded out of the water, first to nudge her rider and then reaching to nudge Chandrany as well.

V’tian made another face. “There’s a lot he apparently never brought up to me.” Was he being a little hypocritical? Maybe. Did he care? No.

“.... Do _you_ like him?” he asked.

“Of course I do,” she said, somehow surprised by the question even though it was a perfectly fair thing to ask, given the conversation. “I mean, he’s good to me. He’s sweet, he says the nicest things anybody’s ever said to me. He was even really nice about _this_, I guess… even though I was being stupid about it. He just wanted to know what to do to make me feel better. And I couldn’t even give him an answer.”

She nudged his shoulder too. “Hey. Don’t break it off with him just because of me. It’s not… I guess it’s not fair to _him_. We’re, um… we’re not even weyrmates or anything. And I don’t think that’s what he wants, anyway. At least not with me. I don’t want to hurt him _or_ you. Or Indith or Yuliuth. Honestly… I sort of wish I’d never found out. Then I wouldn’t have to feel anything about it at all.”

“I'm not feeling particularly charitable.” V'tian muttered. “Because we _do_ know. Let him sweat.”

Chandrany gave a little huff and looked away. “...What if he’s not sweating at all?”

“Then….” V'tian started. Stopped. He glanced at her again. “If he's not concerned, why should _we_ be?” He asked. “If you hadn't come to yell at me, I might never have found out.” He added, with faint humour.

“Honestly… I can't say for sure what I would have done.” He continued finally. “Because I didn't know. He might not have lied, but he still didn't _say_ anything.” He scowled then, and Radiance and Sky both hissed grumpily. “... I _hate_ feeling stupid. Maybe I'll take Indith off somewhere for her next flight. In… in the meantime, name somewhere you want to go. I'll take us.” He offered.

“Taking a ride with my boyfriend’s boyfriend?” The absurdity of it made her laugh -- though it was a genuine laugh this time. Mostly. V’tian was being so nice… surely Ç'pier did like him better.

But… she didn’t want to think about that right now.

“I don’t know where I’d want to go,” she continued thoughtfully. “We already have a beautiful beach. How about the Vintner Hall? They have to have the best tavern there somewhere, right?”

“Deal.” V'tian told her. “And hah-- I'm not sure _what_ I am.” He added. “But honestly… well. We'll see.”

A pause, and then he added, “And we can bring our flits, too. Show them off.”

Gallant chirped at that, as if realizing he was being talked about, and Chandrany smiled. “Yeah, that sounds good, actually. Let’s go!”
