Talryne was glowing. She kept reaching up to touch her new knots, as if she couldn't quite believe this was real. N'vanik had congratulated her with a thorough kiss that left her blushing and then she'd sat with her fellow weavers, chatting excitedly and being embarrassed by their praise.
Now she was moving among the tables, looking for some of her other friends. Vheira wasn't there, which wasn't unusual. Even now, the dragonless woman rarely ate meals in the dining cavern. But her son was, and Talryne smiled at Tavhei. "Thank you again for making those sketches for me. You helped me earn these," she said as she touched her Journeyman knots.
Tavhei smiled warmly back at her. "I just drew the dragon." He responded. "You did all the work, auntie. _Congratulations_." He added.
"Thanks. It's a little hard to believe the Master actually promoted me." Talryne said. "I've been able to focus a little more the past few Turns, but . . . well, you know how hard it can be."
"I do." Tavhei conceded. "But hey! No sad thoughts. You did it!!" He raised his mug to her. "I'll have to draw you something special. Anything you might like?"
She was about to shake her head, but paused to think about it. "Maybe a nice sketch of me and N'vanik, with my new knots?"
"Definitely." Tavhei promised. "I'll start first thing tomorrow-- as soon as I can get you and N'vanik free for a moment to pose." He added.
"No need to rush." She waved a hand. "I remember when you got your Journeyman knots. We were so proud."
"Thank you." Tavhei responded, and set his mug down. He stood, and approached, lifting an arm. "Congratulations hug for you?"
"Of course." She pulled Tavhei into her arms and squeezed him. As uncomfortable as she was at the idea of having children, she did like having something like an adopted nephew.
Tavhei gave her a return hug. "Want to sit and visit for a little bit or are you still mingling?" He asked. "There's a jug of fruit juice."
She hesitated for a brief moment and then took a seat. There were other people she wanted to talk to, but she wanted to spend a little more time with Tavhei. "Thanks." She poured herself a small glass. "Eboroth has apparently been bragging to the other dragons about his tapestry, and now some of them want their own." She hesitated. "I--I'll get someone else to do the sketches, if I decide to do any more."
"I can ask around for other Harper artists who might want to help." Tavhei offered. "Or... If it's for... a really good reason, I... I could at least _try_."
"I shouldn't have even asked you to draw Eboroth," she said.
"It worked out." Tavhei responded immediately, and nudged at her. "I'm _glad_ to have helped you, auntie. Look at what you _did_." He added, gestured at her brand new knots. "You're Journeywoman Talryne now. I really am happy for you."
She couldn't help a smile as she touched the knots again. Then her expression faded a little. "I wish I could tell her. My mother. I know she'd be proud of me, but I want to know what she'd say. I want to hear her voice again . . ." She shook her head and squeezed Tavhei's hand. "I'm so glad you still have yours."
"Me too." Tavhei responded, and squeezed back gently. "I... think your mother would be... really happy. And proud of you." He told her. "You... worked hard on that tapestry." She always worked hard.
Faranth, he sounded mushy. But he _was_ happy for her.
Talryne swallowed hard against tears. "Thank you."
"No problem." Tavhei told her, mismatched eyes studying her for a moment longer before he offered another smile. "... You probably have loads of other people to get congratulated by. I'll find you tomorrow for your drawing, okay?"
