Humming reverberated through the Weyr, announcing that new lives would
soon enter the world and new bonds would be made. N'vanik smoothed his
shirt as he studied himself in the mirror. He was still angry about
what had happened, but today he was smugly satisfied that Loseth had
won despite the scheming and the bronze was adding yet another clutch
to his bloodline.

}:I wouldn't let anyone else claim Panitath. She is _mine_ and _we_
lead the fight against Thread.:{ Loseth had already taken up his
position on the lowest ledge just behind the Queen, hovering
protectively over the eggs and his mate.

N'vanik slipped on the torc and the ring Cyradis had given to him and
then headed over to her weyr.

When she gave him permission to enter, he stepped inside. "Ready?" he
asked as he looked her over appreciatively.

"Ready," she said with a smile and turned in a circle. Her new gown
was a deep green shading to blue at the bottom. The bodice crossed in
the front with a tie at the back that gave her a lifted silhouette.

"You look gorgeous, as always." He gave her a kiss and offered an arm,
his hazel eyes warm with affection and pride.

As they stepped through the doorway to the Hatching Grounds, the
humming of dragons mingled with the buzzing of the crowd. A number of
people turned to watch the Weyrleaders make their way to their seats.

This part of the Hatching was always full of anticipation with the
dragons delivering dignitaries, parents, and other attendees. Then the
candidates began to file in and it even caught her up in the rising
spirits of the event. No matter how many times she'd been in this very
cavern the crack of the first egg always startled her. A smile spread
across her face as the most beautiful green burst from her shell.

Her hand found N'vanik's as she watched the candidates rush into their
designated spots. She chuckled when the tiny beauty's head butted the
back of Koserlen's knees and knocked him over.

On the other side of the cavern another egg stopped rocking and a
little bronze head poked out of the end and immediately began bawling.
Fidarras began running to help and her smile turned into a grin.

A bronze for the kid from White Hollow? Well that was interesting.
N'vanik's attention was drawn to another egg cracking and a
caramel-colored brown tumbled out onto the Sands. He walked slowly
toward the nearest group of Candidates, head moving side to side as he
tried to find his lifemate.

Then several more dragonets hatched in quick succession. Cheers rose
from a section as a boy Impressed a blue, then a green found a
lifemate. Another brown appeared and barreled his way straight toward
his chosen rider.

A green with a darker slightly bluish hide plopped down in front of a
shocked looking Seorla. "That's another one of Calaroth's Candidates,"
N'vanik chuckled. "He's going to be so proud."

She smiled and clutched his hand as fewer and fewer eggs remained on
the sands. Even after so many turns she always seemed to hold her
breath for each one. Then she realized she'd been leaning forward in
anticipation when one egg seemed almost to explode to reveal a blue
hatchling and she flinched back.

A dark haired young man's head whipped around the moment the blue
began bawling. "That's Khuaji," she smiled and nodded. "Zessanth,"
she repeated Panitath's identification. "A good strong blue."

"Gil's guard friend," N'vanik said with warmth and approval as he
watched the young man staring in wonder at his new dragon.

Nearby, a green stumbled into Mavorellin. The boy looked utterly
shocked. }:Yes, I want _you_,:{ the hatchling insisted. }:I can see
everything in your heart. You are mine, and I am yours.:{ Her eyes
whirled with a dazzling rainbow and Mavorellin's eyes filled with
tears. "Lyndath!"

A pitiful cry drew the Weyrleader's attention. The brown that had
hatched earlier still had not found a lifemate and he was now pawing
at the edge of the Stands, staring up at the crowd. N'vanik sat up
straighter. Who was he looking for?

}:Tavhei! Tavhei, look at me!:{ The brown's voice was half-distressed,
half-insistent.

The young man looked down and his face went as white as a fresh
tablecloth. "No!"

}:You are the only one I want.:{ The hatchling managed to pull himself
up the first stair, then another. He wailed, the sound cutting through
everything else. }:Why do you not want me?:{

Tavhei stumbled to his feet and moved as if in a daze toward the
caramel-colored brown.

When N'vanik saw what was happening, his stomach dropped. "Oh, no."

}:Saburoth chose well,:{ Loseth said with paternal pride. }:The one
who reads to me will take good care of him.:{

N'vanik gripped Cyradis's hand. "He never wanted this," he said
without taking his eyes off the pair. "After his mom . . ." Oh,
shards. He'd have to tell Vheira.

}:I'm telling Talryne now. She's with her.:{

**Tell her not to say anything yet. We'll tell her together.** He
wanted Vheira to have as much support as she could when she heard her
son had Impressed.

She covered his hand with her other one. "We have to greet the new
pairs, but I can do that and you can go find Tal... if that is what
you need to do," she said earnestly.

He hesitated. "I need to talk to Tavhei, too." N'vanik took a breath
and let it out. "I'll greet the new pairs with you. It's one of my
favorite things." He managed a small smile. "Me and Tal can give
Tavhei's mom the news after."

She gave him a sad smile of understanding and squeezed his hand. "Let's do it."
