When the dragons started humming, it had been habit that drew Tavhei to the Cavern, as ever finding his seat towards the top of the Stands, thinking more about his next assignment than truly watching dragonets hatch. He'd probably offer to sketch Loseth, whenever he saw N'vanik later. After this was over though, first he'd probably get food from the Feast and go back to check on his mother to eat with her and keep her company the rest of the day. Vheira never came to watch Hatchings, after all, but that didn't mean he couldn't bring her back some food from the Feast, and free up Talryne from keeping his mother company.

Loseth looked proud, he thought idly.

}:Tavhei! Tavhei, _look_ at me!:{ The voice that intruded on Tavhei's thoughts was unfamiliar, uncertain and insistent all in one, and for one _terrible_ moment, Tavhei was reminded of--

}:You are the only one I want.:{ Saburoth insisted, managed to pull himself up the first stair, then another. He stopped on the third, balanced awkwardly, and wailed, the sound cutting through everything else. }:Why do you not want me?:{ He could feel the one who was His, and their alarm unsettled him before he reminded himself that there was no danger. He would surely be told, or smell it, if something was wrong.

Stairs were hard! Life was hard! Surely His person did not expect Saburoth to climb _all_ the stairs! The brown wobbled up another step, then a fifth, before he stopped, eyes locked on the one he knew was his rider.

}:Mine! My Tavhei, won't you _please_ come here?:{ Saburoth appealed, and stretchedhis neck out toward Tavhei with a plaintive creel. He didn’t want to climb forever, after all!

That feeling of determination mingling with the stirring of frustration and flicker of unease finally jarred Tavhei into motion, and he lurched to his feet, stumbled down toward Saburoth, managed not to trip by some miracle, his shock rapidly dwindling in the face of Saburoth's utter certainty.

He could feel the brown's awareness, nestled to his, warm and attentive and _there_, in a way that was rapidly becoming familiar. Tavhei couldn't have said in that moment whether he wanted to laugh or cry.

}:You don't have to be scared.:{ Saburoth said, staunchly, and pressed himself against Tavhei the moment his person made it into range. }:I’m right here. Can we go find food?:{ he asked.

Tavhei reached out, startled only a little bit when his fingers met caramel-brown hide, warm and _living_ and still a little damp and sandy from hatching. This wasn’t a dream, then. Saburoth was real. Saburoth had chosen _him_.

.... _What_ was he going to tell his mother?

}:Of course this is not a dream.:{ Saburoth told him, a little confused, and nudged Tavhei again. }:I am here, and so are you. You came when I called.:{

"I couldn't _not_." Tavhei responded, and finally straightened, glanced around, finally aware of glances their way. "... Back up, Saburoth, or you'll tip over. Here-- I'll keep you steady."

}:Stairs are hard.:{ Saburoth told him, but obeyed. }:No more stairs. Except maybe if there is food.:{
