“Sorry, sir.” Kuhaji blurted, took a step back immediately to let the rider pass.

“Thank you,” came the huffing voice of B’nell, who was trying to keep an armload of books contained as he scooted through. Which…didn’t work. One slipped and hit the floor, and then another joined it. “Ah, beans,” B’nell cursed as he managed to stop the whole stack from escaping.

Kuhaji opened his mouth. Closed it. Then came to some decision, and knelt to pick up the fallen books. “Do you… need help, sir?” He asked. He was new to the Weyr, after all, and from the knots this was clearly a rider. He couldn’t afford to mess up.

The bespectacled brownrider let out a long sigh. “Yes, please,” he asked. At least they weren’t fragile books. The harpers would have had his dragon if he had damaged something so precious. “I just…I was bringing them back to the library. If you can help me with that, please.”

“I don't know where the library is.” Kuhaji responded, perhaps a little bit more flatly than he'd intended. He winced internally. **No**. He had to be on his best behaviour.

“I mean… Yes, sir.” he offered. “If you'll show the way. I… can take a few more of the ones you're carrying, too.” Kuhaji added, with another glance at the stack.

B’nell eagerly accepted the help. “Deal!” he said as he deposited a few more books into Kuhaji’s arms. “I’ll show you where the library is.” He took off, then abruptly stopped as a thought struck him. How did someone not know where the library was? Did they not like to read? “Are you…new here?”

“... Yes sir.” Kuhaji responded, and straightened further, hurried to keep pace with B’nell, though he skidded to a stop when the rider stopped as well. “I… arrived yesterday afternoon.” He added. “I'm still getting used to where everything is.”

The bespectacled brownrider blinked owlishly for a few moments. “Well, I guess I felt the same way when I arrived,” he finally empathized. “Okay, well, if you help me with this, then I can give you a quick tour. Probably.” He scratched his head as his eyes darted around. “I think I have time for that,” he muttered.

}: You do, :{ an amused Vorath supplied.

“Gilbek showed me a lot of the Weyr.” Kuhaji hastened to say. “I'll learn it. It's just a lot to memorize so I’ve focused on one thing at a time.” He added, and gestured. “The Hatching Cavern is that way, for example.”

B’nell’s bespectacled brown eyes dropped to the knots on Kuhaji’s shoulder. “Oh, yeah, that makes sense that you would focus on that. You’re a Candidate. Every Candidate thinks about the upcoming Hatching.”

“It's recognizable.” Kuhaji offered up in response. “The Hatching approaching just means I have less time than people who've been here a lot longer.” His brows drew together in a faint scowl. “If I memorize the main locations first I can build from there.”

}: Makes sense, :{ Vorath remarked, listening in on the conversation. }: We dragons drill on the Star Stones as a focal point in case :{

B’nell blinked as he considered this. “That’s…a good strategy,” he agreed. There was obvious debate in his expression for a moment before he added, “Okay. That’s what we can do then. Library first, then back to Hatching Ground, and then make a route.” He seemed to be talking to himself at first but then looked at Kuhaji to see what he thought.

Kuhaji shrugged one shoulder, indifferent. “If you have time.” He responded. “I can at least figure out the library if I follow you.” he added. Light blue-grey eyes watched the brownrider, expression unreadable, before he nodded once. “It’ll help.”

Nodding, B’nell motioned for Kuhaji to follow him. As he walked, he rambled on. “Okay, so here’s where you would turn to get to the eastern lower stores. There’s about ten rooms down that way. All supplies. And if you turn left here…”

Kuhaji listened readily, nodding here and there as B’nell talked. “... The Weyr must have to store a _lot_, for this many people.” He offered, at the next conversational pause.

“All of the dragons and their riders and their families and the Weyrfolk and their families,” B’nell counted. “I mean, start with some three hundred dragons and then just keep adding numbers to that. You’ll end up with over fifteen hundred people easily.” He did not envy the Headwoman’s job at all. “Oh, and Candidates. Sometimes we have a lot of those too.”

“... I'm a Candidate.” Kuhaji responded. “I mean, for right now. And… your dining cavern alone is huge.”

The bespectacled brownrider scratched his chin thoughtfully. “Yeah, I suppose it would be pretty big if you’ve never seen one before,” he replied. “It certainly was impressive when I arrived.” And he hadn’t planned on staying! That had all been Vorath’s fault. Not that B’nell really held it against him anymore but still…

“... It is at that.” Kuhaji responded, and slid him another sidelong glance. “Even White Hollow wasn’t half as big. I'm… getting used to it though.” He offered. “Slowly.”

“White Hollow, White Hollow,” B’nel repeated. “Where’s that at?”

“... Dolphin Cove territory?” Kuhaji responded with a shrug. “If you showed me a map I could find it. Probably.”

A pause as he grasped for anything else to say, before he rallied. “... Where are you from then?”

“Harper Hall,” B’nell answered, with wistful fondness in his tone. “The original one. Shells, I loved that place. I wasn’t supposed to Impress. It was a joke. My friends dared me to try.” He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. “Sometimes, once is all it takes.” Not like he would trade Vorath for anything but sometimes there were still sharp reminders of how divergent a path his life had taken from his first love of music.

Kuhaji considered that, and then nodded slowly. “That's… what I've heard.” He offered. “Some people Impress right away and some… take a while.” He paused, then added, “I'm probably only going to try this one time.”

B’nell gave him a soft, sincere smile. “Well, I hope you get what you want. It’s a lot, if you Impress, but…it’s worth it.”
