Most people in the infirmary were used to a certain type of comotion from the Weyrhealer's office whenever the handsome bronzerider from Dragonsfall visited, but the wild-eyed looking Weyrhealer who emerged a few moments later was far from usual.
She hesitated for a moment with all eyes on her, looking shaken and a little wobbly. Then she straightened with obvious effort, turning to the nearest apprentice. "Run and fetch Jynrek for me. He's going to have to take over the infirmary again. I'll be gone for at least a day."
M'galec had been standing close-by the Weyrhealer's door. After all, he was _supposed_ to be overseeing her health. He was only looking out for her best interest, really. But this half-crazed Abrei talking about leaving...
"Excuse me, Master Abrei, but can we please speak about this in your office?" Just what was this bronzerider thinking, stealing away Abrei during her recovery!
Abrei waited until the apprentice was out the door before giving M'galec a distracted nod and swinging her crutches back around. Wobbly as she was, she still made it back into her office quickly enough, ignoring the journeyman who was following behind her. "I sent for Jynrek," she told U'kaiah as she dropped back into her chair and set the crutches against the wall. "I'll leave a note for Tsaera and send one to my uncle... he and my aunt might want to go to Dragonsfall as well. But we need to tell Talrian in person."
"I am sorry," M'galec said, eyeing the other bronzerider warily. "What is all this about a trip to Dragonsfall? Who are you exactly."
"U'kaiah, rider of bronze Kalamath. I have come to bring Abrei back to Dragonsfall. It's a family emergency," he answered.
"We need to go to the Vintner Hall, first," Abrei said absently, most of her attention focused on the note she was scribbling. "Rialine will probably want to come as well. I'll have my uncle send his reply to me at Dragonsfall." M'galec shook his head resolutely. "I am sorry, Master Abrei. I understand this is a family emergency, but you are still recovering from surgery. You would be running _serious_ risk of injuring your knee further."
"Have a heart," U'kaiah almost growled. "Her cousin's dragon just went /between/, and I don't have to tell you what that means."
"I am sorry, bronzerider, but Abrei could do her leg a _permanent_ damage.
She would not only undo all the damage her surgery was meant to fix but also make it _worse_. I must insist she remain here."
Abrei was staring at M'galec with her pen hovering over her desk, her face stricken. "M'galec, I _have_ to go."
"I understand that this is a terrible tradgedy, Abrei," the journeyman said gently, "but you know as well as I do the kind of damage you could do to yourself. The kind of _irreversable_ damage. I just cannot let you go. We need a healthy Weyrhealer."
The door had opened behind M'galec during his speech, and Jynrek's voice came from the bronzerider. "I'm sorry, Abrei, but he's right. I know you care about your family, but you can't destroy your chances of recovery."
U'kaiah heard enough. The advice of _two_ healers was not to be ignored.
"I'm sorry, Abrei," he said as he gently lay a hand on her shoulder. "I think you'd best listen to them. I will keep you updated as much as I possibly can."
Pain filled Abrei's eyes as she searched the face of each man in turn, trying to find some argument that might sway them.
None came to mind. Without a word she slid the letter she'd prepared for Talryne's grandparents across the desk toward U'kaiah, her face devoid of all emotion but for the pain in her eyes. "Tell her I'll be there soon," she said in a quiet voice.
"I will," he promised as he gave her shoulder a squeeze and leaned over to kiss the side of her head softly. U'kaiah understood how much she wanted to be there, but both dragonriders silently knew that 'soon' would probably be too late.
