K'ran

K'ran

K'ran widened his eyes and inhaled deeply as soon as Rogueth broke from /between/, eager to chase away the cold and the dark with the smell of the air and the heat of the sun. And what a smell it was, too! The sand below was a ribbon against the beautiful blue sea, glimmering as the sunlight hit it, the wind was whipping strongly against his face, and the smell of seaspray and salt lay strongly in the air. All in all, it was the perfect thing to wake up to.

It was barely dawn at Dragonsfall, but it was after midday at Dolphin Cove.
The peril of timezones, K'ran thought to himself. Rogueth started to spiral down for a landing, and he contented himself with watching the scenery. Yes, this would be an amazing day.

He slid off of Rogueth and affectionately stroked the small bronze's hide as he took off the straps. "So what are you planning to do?" he asked aloud-
who was there to hear them? And if anyone was there, then at least he'd warn them of his presence.

}:I would like to swim. Are there creatures about?:{ asked the bronze as he sent K'ran a picture of a dolphin. }:I wish to swim with them.:{ He, himself, didn't recall that they were fun, but he knew from his rider's memories that he had had fun with them before.

"I certainly hope so, that's why we're at the Dolphin Hall!" K'ran replied.
"Go on then, get out there." The bronze did as told, heading out to the water and swimming out pretty far in search of dolphins.
Smiling happily, K'ran started heading towards the water himself.

A young woman standing waist deep in the water, her hand lifted to shade her eyes as she watched Rogueth swim out. She turned to catch K'ran's eyes and grinned at him. "Is your dragon looking for dolphins?"

"Yes, he is!" K'ran called back, heading over. "And so am I. Although I'm mostly looking to see the new Dolphin Hall, too- I haven't been here since it moved. Do you think there are any dolphins around?"

"Most of them were out swimming, but if you stay here for a little while you might get to see one." Zanie held out a hand when K'ran reached her smiling down at the bronzerider. "I'm Zanie. I'm taking my morning swim a little late this morning, but maybe I can help you and your friend find some dolphins!"

"Well met, Zanie. I'm K'ran, that's Rogueth, and we hail from Dragonsfall.
It's a lovely location here." he remarked, taking her hand.

Zanie grinned. "Oh, it is. I haven't been to many places, I admit, but I think the coastline here can be pretty exciting all on its own."

"Oh, you haven't?" K'ran asked, a bit surprised. "I would have thought the Dolphineer craft would be one that would give you lots of opportunities to travel. Well, maybe not here in the South- but in the North, at least."

"Well, I was born in the north, but my father came down here when I was just a baby." Zanie shrugged and ran her fingers through the water absently. "It was friendly enough at Topaz Seahold, but I don't think I'd be too welcome at some of the other places."

"That's a shame." K'ran remarked quietly. "Pern's such a big place, and there are so many really amazing sites out there. If you can, maybe you should visit the North sometime, check out some of the places- you'd be welcomed, and they're lovely. Mostly colder then here, though."

Zanie laughed. "You talk about it like it's so easy! The only dragonrider I'm friends with only just finished weyrling training. I don't even know if he can go that far away yet."

"Ah, so you have dragonrider friends then? Well, being near a Weyr, I imagine you would." K'ran smiled. "He might be allowed to, depending on wing drills and duties. Are you two very close?"

"I guess. It was sort of funny... I'd met him once before at a Gather at Topaz Sea Hold before the storm wiped everything out. Turns ago. Then I met him again here, because he'd been Searched." She still felt far too self-concious about their brief liason. If she had been so ready to choose Renner over D'cal, she never should have been with him to begin with.

"That's interesting, how you can connect with someone multiple times in your life. Seems like things guided you two to be friends." Coincidence was rarely just coincidence to K'ran. "How do you like living so by a Weyr now?
Are you part of it, or just neighbors?"

"Oh, we're just neighbors." Something that her father kept trying to remind her of forcefully. "But I like it. I love watching the dragons, and it makes it easier to get places when we need to! For a while, a dragonrider was taking me and another dolphineer to Topaz Seahold every few days so we could chart the changes in the coast. I do mostly cartography."

"Cartography? I bet you don't get lost much, then." K'ran had visited Topaz once or twice. It had been a very striking place. "Did the coast change a lot after all of the damage?"

Zanie's face lost its smile. "It's like an entirely different place. It might not be that noticible to some people, but so much about it has changed."

"That's sad." K'ran said softly. "I hope they fix it one day. It's never nice to see places destroyed or abandoned or neglected. There are old Weyrs and Holds that used to be abandoned. When you think people used to live there, and now it's just stone and dust...it's creepy."

"And depressing," Zanie added. "But you must have visited lots of places that weren't! Where's your favorite?"

"Ista." K'ran replied immediately. "Climate's like here, very warm and humid. But the beaches on the island are of black sand. It's beautiful."

"It sounds like it." She couldn't help but wonder if D'cal would be willing to take her to Ista--or if he could even go there. She didn't know anything about the rules that covered young riders.

"Do the dolphins here stay here, or do they migrate around? Do they ever tell you stories about other places? I've heard dolphins have traditions like we do."

Zanie laughed, thinking she might have found someone as curious as she was!
"Why don't you swim a ways out with me and I'll tell you about them. Then, maybe we can find one willing to meet you!"
