"Catch!" V'con threw the bag of firestone to the next Weyrling in the chain. He caught it and turned to throw it back. up the line. "R'mer you're next!"

The bronze weyrling was ready and waiting. "Toss it a little harder this time," he called over to him.

"You sure?" he teased watching as the bag went down the line again.

"Yes," R'mer called down. After all, the last time R'mer had to bend down at an uncomfortable angle to catch the bag which, had he been on Hanunth's neck, he would have lost his balance and perhaps slipped or even injured his back by the awkward weight.

The bag seemed fly back down the line - faster this time. V'con managed to catch it, and throw it back up. This time he put all his weight behind it, as requested.

R'mer nodded appreciatively as he was able to catch it easily, though it smacked his hands pretty mightily. "Much better," he called back down.

V'con wasn't as well built as R'mer, and with his physique, he'd never match it. "Say when," he called as the bag came back in his direction.
"Wonder how long we've got left on this?"

"Shouldn't be long now," R'mer replied. "It's gotta be close to dinner time by _now_!" The bronze weyrling could already feel the hunger pangs.

"I hope it's not that spiced wherry again."

"Hey, as long as its food, I'm not picky," the bronze weyrling called back. He had lived hand to mouth so long, R'mer had learned that _any_
food was a blessing.

"But the spiced wherry is just..." V'con pulled a face. "Maybe there'll be fish?"

"You seem pretty particular about your food, V'con," R'mer commented.

"I just don't like Wherry meat," said the blue weyrling. He then turned and caught the firestone again before passing it on.

"What _do_ you like then?" R'mer asked and then tossed the bag on to the next weyrling. He winced slightly as he watched the bag sail a little short. "Sorry about that!" he called over to the young woman.

"Fish, and roasted herdbeast."

R'mer shrugged. "I guess I never gave it that much thought, personally."

"It just seemed like it was always Wherry where I grew up."

"Where's that?"

"Dragonsfall Weyr."

"How did you end up _here_ then? Couldn't you stand over there?" R'mer thought it would be strange to just move from one Weyr to another.
After all, what could be so different between one Weyr and the next?

"My Ma's a greenrider, she transferred here and I came with."

"But I thought greenriders couldn't raise their children," R'mer said, confused by the apparent inconsistancey with everything people had told him.

"I had a foster mother, but before the pass I spent a lot of time with her."

"Ah, I see," R'mer said with a shrug. Somehow he had never figured dragonriders could be close to their children. It was good to know.

"Maybe we'll be put in the same wing when we graduate," speculated V'con.

"It's possible," R'mer nodded, though he was just trying to make it through to senior weyrling. "I can't wait to be able to go home again."

"Got a big family?"

"Three sisters, a brother and my mother. Not so big. It would have been bigger if my father hadn't died."

"I have no brothers or sisters."

"They can be real pains sometimes," R'mer admitted, "But I still miss them."

"They'll be proud of you, bronzerider."

"Thank you." R'mer sighed his relief as the Weyrlingmaster's assistant called a halt to the exercise. "Time to eat," he grinned.

"At long last."

"I'm bet you tomorrow's barrack cleaning chores its spiced Wherry meat again," the bronzeweyrling said with a challenging grin.

"You get mine if it's fish."

"Deal."
