Something To Look Forward To

"Wow, your new weyr is a _lot_ nicer than mine!" Isaline had realized, of course, that he would end up with a nicer weyr than hers. Bronzeriders always did, but she didn't envy him the responsibility that would come with it. "Isn't it nice to have our own space?"

"Actually, it's rather... quiet. I've never lived alone," R'mer said with a shrug as he looked around the spartan room. "There's something lonely about the way it echoes."

"I never have either," Isaline admitted, coming back to his couch and throwing herself down gracelessly. "But I _love_ it! No siblings or apprentices or candidates to borrow my things or get in my way!"

"I suppose I'll get used to it," he said as he eased down beside her. Not too close, though. They were, after all, still junior weyrlings. "Maybe...
you can visit me sometimes."

"Even if you don't invite me," she replied with a grin, tucking her feet under her. "And when we graduate to the wings and get bigger weyrs, I bet _yours_ will have a bathing pool, and then I'll be here all the time!" "You'd be invited anytime," R'mer said with a knowing smile. He was pretty sure she knew he meant she was welcome for more than just friendly chats.

The smile made her think the sort of thoughts she didn't need to be thinking. Not for a few more days, at least. "Anytime, hmmm? One would think you're fond of me!"

"Well, I guess I am. Kind of." He looked down at his hands as a slight blush crept up to his cheeks.

Isaline grinned. "Only _kind_ of?"

"Well... maybe a little more than kind of," R'mer mumbled with a shrug.

Realizing she was making him uncomfortable, Isaline settled back. "Well, that's good. Because I like you more than a little, too."

R'mer glanced up at her quickly, but a small smile tugged at his lips.
"Really? You do?"

Isaline laughed and reached over to nudge him playfully with her foot.
"Don't be silly. Of course I do!"

He wasn't so sure it was being silly. After all, he knew he wasn't the only boy she had been with. But if she said so... "Well, all right then," R'mer said with a small smile.

"Are you scared?" she asked suddenly, her face going serious. "About going /between/, I mean."

"Oh, no," he lied. "Why, are you?"

Isaline didn't bother to lie. "I'm terrified."

Secretly, R'mer was too. He had only been /between/ once in his life - the day he came to the Weyr. But he remembered it was dark and cold and he had felt on the edge of panic as the seconds passed like minutes. "Dragons are born to go /between/," he said, trying to sound reassuring. But he knew that even dragons got lost there sometimes.

"R'mer?" Isaline's voice was quiet and a little frightened. "If we make it through, we're going to come back here and tear each other's clothing off, right? Because I could use something not-scary to look forward to..."

R'mer swallowed thickly. It almost sounded terrifying the way she put it.
And a rather exciting... "I think I'd like to look forward to that too."

She held his eyes for a few moments, wondering how much trouble she'd get in if she threw caution to the wind and kissed him. They were going /between/ in a few days, probably... how much could her dragon really mature in that time?

But Y'sani had already given her a stern look and a talking to on the subject, and she wasn't willing to risk Thanatath. Not for comfort she'd get in a few days anyway. "Then it's a deal. And don't think you can go get lost /between/ just to get out of it!"

R'mer chuckled and glanced up at her. "You either, then."
