"Okay, Kegy, what does this mean?" Ednan asked and using his hand, splashed a sequence to the water's surface. He was crouching at the float, teaching signals to the young dolphin calf.
"Rrreport?" the little dolphin sounded uncertain.
"No, this is report," Ednan replied and splashed another signal. "What the first one was? Come on, you know it."
"I don't rrememberr," Kegy admitted and rolled from side to side.
Trellyn watched as the pair worked and sat down next to Ednan, "Don't get flustered Kegy, it took Kibb several suns to remember some of these signals."
"Yes, she's right," Ednan said and gave the young calf's melon a scratch. "Maybe you need a break anyway."
"You too," she said to Ednan, why don't you stretch your legs for a bit while she's stretches her flippers."
"Yeah, you're right journeywoman," Ednan replied. He got up and stretched. Dolphineering had given him a nice looking, athletic body.
Trellyn looked up at the senior apprentice and realized she wasn't against _admiring_ that dolphineer body either. Before he could notice her attentions, she shifted her gaze to the horizon. "Dolphin report calls for good weather tomorrow, are you two going to do any long swimming?"
"Yes, Kegy needs to work up her strength," Ednan replied.
"ssswwim!" The little dolphin called and tried to tailwalk. She couldn't quite do it yet. She ended up splashing in to the water backfin first.
"Oh Kegy! Are you all right?" Ednan called. The dolphin let out a annoyed whistle.
Trellyn laughed as she watched the young dolphin's antics. "Kibb and I might join you if you're interested in company."
"Erh, you're welcome with us," Ednan said, suddenly shy and very aware of her femininity.
She noticed his slight change of mood, but didn't think much of it.
"Good, maybe Kegy can give Kibb a good workout. He's always saying I'm too slow!"
"Compared to them, we are slow," Ednan said. Even a halfgrown calf like Kegy could outswim any human.
"Hey! I'm not slow!" she cried, feigning outrage as she playfully shoved his shoulder with her own.
She caught him off-guard and he stumbled, falling into the water.
Trellyn was momentarily startled by the fall, but then erupted into loud laughter as he came up sputtering. "You know... for a dolphineer you aren't very graceful!" She bent down and extended her hand to help him out of the water.
"Blame it being grown up in a harper family. I was encouraged to sing and play flute, not develop my physique," Ednan said with all dignity he could muster while dripping sea water. He suddenly grinned.
Personally, she thought his physique was pretty sharding developed, but there was no reason to stroke his ego. "So are you going to take my hand or are you going to swim all day?" she teased.
"Oh," Ednan said and took the hand, letting her pull him back up.
He almost pulled her in with him, but Trellyn's muscles were strong after years of swimming, and she managed to stabilize him enough until he was able to climb up the rest of the way. As she watched him straighten up she couldn't help but admire his body as the water droplets fell off his toned and tanned skin. She sighed, shaking her head, deciding that maybe she needed a cool swim to calm herself down and to get the glistening dolphineer out of her mind.
Ednan picked up a towel from the pier and started to dry himself out.
He noticed Kegy's dam arriving, coming to pick up her calf.
"Well, looks like time's up then." Trellyn nodded as the dolphins started to depart. "Let me know about that swim though."
"Yes, journeywoman Trellyn," Ednan said, his voice muffled by the towel.
Trellyn pried her eyes off Ednan again and let out a long breath. A cool swim was definitely in order...
