"I'm afraid we have a problem." Jynrek spoke the words calmly as he settled into the seat across from Tsaera's desk, but he didn't need to speak them at all. Tsaera already knew there was a problem, because he'd told her he was worried about Abrei. What she hadn't known was just how bad it had gotten.
"U'val is all right?" Tsaera asked worriedly.
"He's resting for now, but that's not the problem." Sighing, Jynrek folded his hands on her desk and met her eyes. "It is my professional opinion that Abrei is not capable of performing her duties under her current level of physical and emotional stress. I've been worried about her well-being before, but tonight I had to intercede to keep her from damaging the well-being of a patient."
The Weyrwoman's lips thinned. Shards, what was happening to her Weyrhealer?! "What happened?"
"She was bickering when she should have been seeing to her patient," Jynrek replied, sounding tired. "She's at her limit, Tsaera. Even if she hadn't just undergone taxing surgery, I'd suggest that the tragedies in her personal life would be enough of a distraction that she'd need a break. And she isn't going to listen to it coming from me, because she will never believe that I have no particular need to take her place."
}:The Weyrhealer's cousin's dragon went /between/ at Dragonsfall Weyr,:{ Tabanirth reminded her quietly. The gold dragon had a better memory for familial relations than her rider did. }:She was a green.:{
"I was under the impression that Abrei _was_ cutting back on her workload post-surgery... what do the other healers think? Have they discussed anything with you?"
Jynrek hesitated for a moment, not sure he wanted to pass on what amounted to gossip. But if Tsaera went looking, she was likely to hear it from the first healer she asked anyway. "This is purely unsubstantiated rumor, and not anyone's expert medical opinion. But apparently Abrei has been displaying symptoms that are indicative of the early stages of pregnancy."
"_Pregnant_?!" The exclamation flew past her lips before she had the chance to censor it. Really, though, why was she surprised? She'd had first hand proof that the Weyrhealer had an active love life. "Ah- well. Whether she is or not is immaterial unless Abrei herself confirms her condition. And pregnancy is not a good enough reason for erratic behavior."
"My concern would be that the symptoms she's exhibiting can also be attributed to stress," Jynrek continued, hoping Tsaera would not take the rumor _too_ seriously. "Mindhealing isn't my specialty, but I know enough to know that whatever is happening with her, she can't cope with it anymore by herself. She needs quiet and she needs help. It could be that she just needs a few sevendays to grieve, but she can't remain in the infirmary like this."
"So - you want me to put her on a forced leave."
Jynrek nodded reluctantly. "I'm happier not being in charge of the infirmary, and I wouldn't feel slighted if you put someone else in charge this time. But someone has to take over for her until she's well. I understand wanting to work to distract yourself from your pain, but it isn't acceptable when lives are at stake and you can't concentrate."
Tsaera was quiet a moment. Abrei lived to work, and as a workaholic herself, Tsaera couldn't fault her for it. But just as she would want someone to put her in her place if she was endangering the Weyr, so would she deal with Abrei. "I'll deal with it. Do you think that she'll be able to continue teaching the apprentices and overseeing the journeymen, though?"
"I don't see why not," Jynrek said after a moment's hesitation. "The worst she can do to them is be a little short tempered, and I can keep an eye on that."
"All right. I'll speak with her tomorrow morning, and you are now Acting Weyrhealer, Jynrek." Tsaera sighed, already dreading the meeting. "Thank you for bringing this to my attention."
"Of course, Tsaera." Jynrek managed a half-smile. "I'll keep the infirmary together long enough for Abrei to pull _herself_ together. I just hope it's sooner rather than later."
