R'mer stood propped up against a pillar holding a mug of ale in his hand. He scanned the faces in the crowd, but he couldn't find the one he was looking for. Shards, just where was Isaline? They were supposed to be dancing and drinking and having a good time. Instead he felt like an idiot standing all alone for Faranth knows how long. R'alt wasn't even around to talk to. He was just... standing there... like the odd man out.

Maybe he should just go. Obviously Isaline found something better to do than dance with him. R'mer wasn't sure he could really blame her. After all, he was a terrible dancer, and she was having to teach him half the steps. Maybe she just wasn't having any fun with him. And there were just too many people. Yeah, he should just go. He needed some air anyway. It wasn't like anyone would miss him.

He'd made it out of the Weyr and almost to the beach when the sound of running footsteps sounded behind him. Isaline's voice came, sounding breathless. "R'mer! R'mer, wait for me!"

"Hey," he said as he turned back to look at her. Shoving his hands in his pockets he asked, "So, where did you go?"

Isaline had hiked up her gown to make it easier to run, and looked disheveled and out of breath. "Oh, I just got caught by an old friend.
They talked and talked and I couldn't get free."

Well, she sure seemed more interested in spending time with old friends than with him... "Yeah, well, that's fine. I'm probably not that good of company anyway. You can go dance if you want. I just don't want to be around all the people right now."

Guilt made Isaline want to squirm. "But I want to be with you. Can I walk with you?"

He shrugged a shoulder as if it didn't matter. Truth was it did. She had left him for better company and that stung. It more than stung, it hurt. "You're all dressed up. You might ruin your dress down at the beach. Besides, your friends are inside. Its ok. Really."

"You're not inside," she pointed out, dropping her skirts and trying to smooth them down. Her dress had certainly been through a lot this evening. "And you're the one I want to spend time with."

Yeah. Now. "Sure, if you like. You're going to get your dress dirty and your shoes full of sand though."

Isaline kicked off her shoes. "I hate them anyway," she admitted. "I don't know how girls where those stupid little slippers. And who cares about the dress. I only wore it for you."

That brought a slight smile to his face. "Really?"

She slipped her hand into his. "Of course. This is the first dress I've ever owned." She glanced down at it, doing her best not to blush at the knowledge that it had spent much of its short life in a pile on the floor of R'alt's weyr. "But I just wanted to look pretty for you."

"But you always look pretty," he said, a little of the light coming back to his eyes. She had tried to look pretty for _him_? He didn't know why that made his stomach feel all fluttery, but it did.

Isaline smiled in pleasure. "But I wanted to look like a girl, too. I wanted to do something special."

"No one's ever dressed up just for me before. I like it." He brought her hand to his lips and kissed it softly. "Thank you."

"You're welcome," she replied, glancing around. They were far enough from the Weyr that there wouldn't be anyone to see if she pulled him down to the sand. She had to do something to make up for the way she'd left him, but R'alt hadn't exactly been brief or subdued with his attentions. She didn't know how energetic she could be now... But for him, she'd try.
