Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 3 of Turn 4
}: I itch :{ Ayumith complained from her couch.
"You can't, I oiled you less than two candlemark's ago," Aishara said and put away the hide she had been reading.
}: But I still itch. See? :{
"Where?" Aishara asked and came to see her dragonet. Ayumith pointed with her nose and Aishara did found a patch that felt dry and flaking.
"All right then. Let's go outside and I oil you again. We don't want oil into our bed, do we?"
}: No we don't :{ Ayumith agreed and got up to her feet. Aishara took the oil and followed her out.
Y'sani was sitting outside, checking over a stack of leather to see which would be salvageable as riding straps for the new weyrlings. He smiled when Ayumith and Aishara emerged. "Good afternoon, Aishara. Ayumith."
"Good afternoon, sir," Aishara replied and then looked him hesitantly, unsure if she should ask him about Ayumith's hide or not.
Correctly interpreting the look as a question, Y'sani gave the seat next to him a pat. "Why don't you sit down and talk for a little bit? Tell me how everything is going."
"Ayumith is itching, I should oil her first," Aishara said
apogeletically. "Is that normal? I mean, I oiled her after dinner and now her hide's drying again."
"It can be," he said easily. "Why don't we get some oil and I'll give you a hand? I can tell you if everything looks okay, and Ayumith will get twice the attention."
"All right, sir," Aishara replied. Ayumith was rubbing her itching side against the barrack's wall.
There was plenty of oil to be found around the weyrling barracks, and Y'sani retrieved. "Come here, my little beauty. Let's see about those itchy spots, hmmm?"
Ayumith came eagerly and Aishara wrapped up her sleeves. "Seems like I'm allways either washing, feeding or oiling her!"
"It will be like that for a while," Y'sani admitted, reaching down to run his fingers lightly along her hide until he found the rough patch. "This is where it itches?"
"Yes," Aishara said after Ayumith had confirmed to her that it really was the itchy spot.
"Poor little lady." Y'sani held out the oil to Aishara. "Sometimes in the beginning you'll need to watch out for rough spots a few times a day.
They're growing so quickly right now that their hides just can't keep up. But there's nothing wrong with Ayumith that a little oil and care won't fix right up."
"Good to hear," Aishara said and started to spread the oil to the green's hide. She had been worried that Ayumith had some dragon version of hives.
"Not at all," Y'sani reassured her in a soothing voice. Some of the other weyrlings had already been introduced to his stern or sarcastic Weyrlingmaster voice, but Aishara was struggling with an overwhelming amount of new knowledge already. Y'sani planned to go gently with her until he was sure she had settled in comfortably.
"Does dragons get sick like people?" Aishara asked.
"Not exactly." Y'sani reached down to scratch Ayumith's eyeridge absently. "A lot of things that can get people sick won't have any affect on dragons. I'll have one of the weyrlingstaff assistants sit down with you and give you the details on what you need to be careful of. And if you
ever have any questions, find me or have Ayumith bespeak Luthinath."
"Yes, sir," Aishara said and rubbed oil to Ayumith's itching spot. The dragon let out a croon of pleasure. "There's so much I don't know," she sighed.
"But you'll learn it," he replied confidently. "I know it's hard, coming into this without any of the classes. But you're hardly the first, and some of your fellow weyrlings weren't Candidates for very long before the Hatching and probably feel just as lost as you do."
Aishara nodded. She hadn't thought of that. There were last minute searches, she had heard of them.
With Aishara looking a little more steady, Y'sani stood. "You can put the oil back where we found it when you're done, and let me know if you need anything else. I've got to finish checking over that leather."
"Yes, sir, thank you, sir." Aishara said and smiled.
