Description: J'darin comes to see Y'sani the night before the Senior Weyrlings graduate. And tells him what he _really_ thinks of his Weyrlingmaster punching a former Weyrleader.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 3, day 7 of Turn 4
He didn't send Oak with a summons; he didn't ask Hasaarth to bespeak Luthinath.
He just simply showed up after the evening meal with a flask of wine in one hand and a couple of hides in the other.
Hasaarth remained curled up with Nyith and J'darin asked him to let Y'sani know through his bronze that he was outside of his door with full hands.
** Tell him I come bearing gifts, beloved..**
}: Mine says for yours to open the door, Luthinath. He has gifts. :{ J'darin laughed as the sending echoed. Not as polite as he hoped, but it would have to do.
A few moments later, the door to Y'sani's office opened. He looked from the Weyrleader's face to his full hands and back again. "J'darin. Good evening."
Stepping aside, he opened the door far enough to let the Weyrleader in.
Without ceremony, J'darin laid down the few hides he carried and hunting up two glasses in Y'sani's office. He poured from his flask while he watched the Weyrlingmaster.
"I knew I'd find you here, Y'sani. Hasaarth chased me out of my own office, so I brought you a break from your labors."
He paused. He suddenly smiled and raised his glass. "I wanted to say thank you for punching that ...sharding wherry's arse. I couldn't say it before, but I can now. "
Y'sani watched him for a moment and then snorted and took the other glass.
"I sincerely wish he hadn't put me in that position, but I can't say I regret it. Maybe if someone had punched him a few times when he was younger, it might have actually done him some good."
J'darin chuckled dryly at that and took a seat. "I've heard that said of me, as well. Perhaps all bronzeriders need a punch in the face to restore their sense."
The glass was raised again. "You're officially off those "extra duties", not that it was much of a punishment for you, hmm?"
The Weyrlingmaster smiled as he sat back down in his own chair. "Aside from the lack of sleep, it was surprisingly like a vacation. Several candlemarks a day where I didn't have to worry about the weyrlings." In theory, of course... in practice he'd spent half of his time fretting that one of them would do something stupid while he was elbow deep in cooking pots.
"I doubt it, Y'sani, but I'm glad it wasn't too hard for you. I know you understand why I did what I did." J'darin took another, longer drink.
"And now you're back on duty just in time to send the senior Weyrlings to the Wings." He pointed to the few hides he'd brought; they were Senior Weyrling reports, including ages and colors.
His face became serious. "And we need every one of them."
"I know we do," Y'sani replied, his voice just as serious. "I'll be a pain in your ass sometimes, J'darin. I won't deny it. But I'll turn out weyrlings who can fill your ranks, and I'll do it well. It's what I do."
J'darin nodded once, though what he was agreeing to was unclear. "And I will lead this Weyr against Thread successfully with the riders you train. Its what _I_ do." A faint smile curled along his face.
One last raise of his glass, then he finally went on.
"So, are your Senior Weyrlings ready to start filling the Wings, as you say?
tomorrow is graduation day."
Y'sani nodded. "All of the ones who are of age will be assets to whatever Wingleader takes them."
"At least this time most of them are old enough to fly in the Wings."
J'darin said quietly, thinking of the past few clutches that had chosen several younger riders, leaving him with the task of waiting turns more than he should have to for riders to fight Thread.
"Don't forget, we'll have another fine clutch on the Sands soon." Y'sani took a sip of his wine and tried to relax his tired muscles. "Things will settle down, J'darin. We'll get back to normal. Dolphin Cove has some good days coming, I hope, after all the tragedy."
J'darin closed his eyes for a moment, imagining a Weyr where he could actually field full Wings was something he wasn't sure he'd ever see again, but things certainly were looking up lately.
After another moment, he opened his eyes and smiled in memory. "I hope for a _very_ fine Clutch, and give you more work to do, hmm?"
Y'sani snorted. "I think I've got enough... but I'll manage. I always do."
He took another sip of the wine and sighed. "Though if I'm going to manage tomorrow, I need to find a bed and fall into it."
J'darin nodded slowly, giving his Weyrlingmaster one last look. He was _very_ good at his job. Thank Faranth. "I understand completely, Y'sani. Please rest....and accept my thanks for a job well done." He said sincerely, rising to his feet to leave his fellow bronzerider to his own devices - and his own night-before-graduation thoughts - for the evening.
