Notes: Ylisahn's Storm 01 - Sandbagging begins
"You have them up early," the Headwoman commented to the Weyrlingmaster as she caught sight of the weyrlings entering the dining cavern and shaking themselves free of a variety of oiled capes and coats. "Of course, who isn't up early with this sort of weather hanging around?"
"I figured it would be best," Y'sani replied, running a hand through his own damp hair. "Getting them all in one place seemed the easiest way to deal with whatever comes."
"What about their dragons?" Ylisahn asked uncertainly. Sometimes young dragons reacted to things in unexpected ways.
"Once things get underway, the junior weyrlings will be doing nothing but taking care of their dragons. That's why I wanted to get them here early... J'darin thought it would be best to make them useful before things get too bad, and I agree."
"Sandbagging?" she suggested tentatively. Perhaps the Weyrlingmaster would prefer his charges in less menial work. "It's what we're all going to be starting with."
Y'sani dispelled her fears with a grin. "Sounds perfect. And character building, too. That'll give the youngsters something to do to keep their minds off of things. Have you got anything else that needs attending to?"
"Not as important as sandbagging, right now, but if the storm keeps getting worse we'll start moving stores and essentials upstairs." She laughed. "And people, but they're mostly going to be moving themselves and their possessions."
"Fair enough." Y'sani turned and stepped up onto a nearby bench to give himself a good view of the weyrlings scattered at the tables below. "Junior weyrlings! Get your cloaks and capes back out. You're headed back outside." He ignored the one or two groans at that and continued on. "The Headwoman needs you to help make sandbags so we can hold off the water if it comes to that. It's not all that different from bagging firestone, so I expect you to all be _very_ good at it."
A fair haired young girl in the front rose a hand to catch Y'sani's attention. "What about our dragons?"
"Luthinath is with your dragons, and we'll all be keeping an eye on them for the next candlemark or so," Y'sani replied. "Once we're done with you outside, you'll be released to help keep your lifemates calm. Luthinath will tell me if any of your dragons start to panic, but if you get worried, I want you to tell me." He caught sight of a grin from one of the blueriders in the back and pointed a finger at him. "_Legitimately_ worried, T'ras. If I catch anyone trying to use their dragon as an excuse to shirk work, they will not enjoy the next few months."
Once the bluerider's grin had faded, Y'sani took a moment to look at all of them. "This is serious work, and I want you to put your full attention to it. The Headwoman has my full permission to punish anyone who does not. And when she's done with you, you're going to have to deal with me. So get something warm to drink, and then you're on your way outside."
Hopping down from the chair, he smiled wearily at Ylisahn. "Hopefully that'll keep them under control."
"I'm sure it will! Thank you, Y'sani. No doubt I'll send them back wet and tired, but they will have done their bit. Are you thinking of clearing their gear out of the Weyrling Barracks? Or your own from your office? Or at least getting stuff off the floor."
"It's next on my rather long list," he admitted. "I'm going to take a couple of the senior weyrlings with me to do that. They can /between/ to the upper weyrs and handle it more quickly. At least the important things will be moved--and anything we might need if the worst happens."
"We'll let's hope it's not as bad as predicted, though being prepared will be an even better defence than sandbags, most likely." Wasn't that always the way? Extensive preparation 'in case' and then 'in case' didn't eventuate? She could only hope this would be one of those times.
