K'deren

K'deren

**Won't be long until our helpers arrived,** K'deren spoke to Donneth.
**Don't scare them off, all I need are some messages run around the Weyr.**
He could have used the dragon, but as a Wingsecond he could ask to have a
messenger or two available to him, and there was the fact that not everyone
had a dragon that could pass on the messages.

"You don't think he'll send us home, do you?" Toncha asked her brother,
hurrying to keep up with his longer stride.

"Maybe," was his reply. "Maybe that's the best thing for us."

"No it isn't!" she told him indignantly. "We were Searched and have as much
right to be here as anyone else." She barely kept from running into his
back as he stopped and knocked on a door.

"Come!" called out K'deren, waiting for the promised messengers to present
themselves.

"Sir?" The boy asked as he entered. "The Headwoman sent us here."

For once, his sister hung back, uncertain why they had been called to this
weyr. Thus far they had met a few dragonriders, but most of those encounters
were with younger riders.

"That's right," said the Wingsecond. "I'm K'deren Donneth's rider and
Cyclone Wingsecond," he said watching their faces to see if the pair were
intimidated by that or not. "You two are here because I need some messages
run about the Weyr."

Toncha moved into view, no longer hiding behind her brother. "You aren't
going to send us home?"

"Why would you think that?"

"Because I like it here but I'm afraid that someone is going to tell us to
leave."

"We _do_ have another home," her brother reminded her, though she frowned at
those words.

"Nobody is ever forced to leave a Weyr against their will. Did you two not
know that?" He supposed that some of the candidates that came from the more
remote holds, or who had had a more sheltered upbringing might not have
heard that fact.

"_He_ says I should probably go home." The girl indicated her brother.

"Someone should look after Grandda," Chabal insisted.

"Then _you_ go home."

The boy glanced toward the dragonrider. "Sorry. That's sort of an on-going
argument for us."

"I understand, I'm the same with my brothers and sisters. Now, can you two
take some messages around for me?"

"Yes, sir," Chabal answered immediately, straightening his stance.

"Of course, sir." Toncha's reply was accompanied by a bright smile.

"Right," he reached for a small pile of folded hides. "Here they are. This
is for the Healers, this one for the Weyrtanner and the rest have their
destinations written on them. If you two can wait for any replies, then
bring them back once you're done."

"I'll take the one to the Healers," the girl put in immediately. "I've been
working with them and can see that it gets to the correct one. Chabal can
take the Weyrtanner's." She wrinkled her nose in distaste. "He's always near
the beastpens anyhow."

"We can split them and be back quickly." Chabal reached for the stack of
hides and took over the task of assigning their delivery.

"Good, I'll see you back here in two candlemarks or so."

"Yes, sir. We'll get these done as quickly as possible." The young man
flashed a smile as he led his sister to the door.

"Yes, sir," she repeated, rushing to keep up with her brother yet trying to
smile at the rider as she moved.
