A Reasonable Workload

Characters: R'syl, Jynrek
Description: R'syl stops by the infirmary to see an injured weyrling, and has an interesting conversation with the Weyrhealer.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 3, day 13 of Turn 4

R'syl rubbed his neck absently as he waited for the Masterhealer to finish
talking to the apprentice in front of him. He'd hoped to meet the man
eventually, but had not planned on it when he'd decided to stop by and
check on the young greenrider who'd sprained her ankle.

Eventually the apprentice nodded and scampered off, leaving Jynrek to turn
his attention to R'syl. "Can I help you?"

"Yes. I'm here to see Sharevah. She hurt herself in my class earlier, and
I wanted to know how she's doing." He said, offering his hand. "My name's
R'syl, Weyrhealer." He added belatedly.

Jynrek smiled and accepted his hand. "It's nice to meet you, R'syl. I'm
Jynrek. Sharevah's with a journeyman right now, but you could have a seat
in my office to wait, if you like."

"That would be fine." He agreed. "It's just easier to reassure Marasith if
I talk to her." Not to mention reassure himself. He hadn't had much time
with the weyrlings here yet, but he liked Sharevah. She tried hard, which
was more than some did.

"Follow me, then." Jynrek moved to his office and opened the door,
gesturing for R'syl to precede him. Once the door was closed, he took a
seat behind his desk. "It will be good for us to have a little talk,
actually, since M'galec now reports to you."

"I've been thinking the same thing." R'syl admitted with a grin. "I never
thought I'd have such a multi-talented 'second. Most men prefer not to
divide their loyalties that much."

Jynrek did his best not to sigh. "He is indeed talented, there is no
question about that." And he knew it. Shards, did he know it!

R'syl raised an eyebrow. "I'm aware that M'galec is not well loved,
Weyrhealer." He said dryly. "But I try not to put my faith in rumors, and
have yet to have a horror story involving him."

"I think that 'horror' might be a bit of a strong word," Jynrek replied
carefully. "He does have a way of upsetting people, though. But I only
rarely see that get in the way of his duty, so I do my best to disregard
it."

"As do I." R'syl agreed. "So what's on your mind?"

"M'galec is a very dedicated man, but I think he has a rather inaccurate
idea as to how badly we need him." Which was the politest way Jynrek could
think of to describe M'galec's opinion that the infirmary would collapse
without him. "The former Weyrhealer worked herself to the point of
illness. I was hoping to enlist your help in convincing him to consider a
more reasonable workload."

Ah. "I see. I'd wondered about that." R'syl admitted. "Two positions seems
like an excessive amount of stress, especially for a surgeon. I can
certainly try, but he doesn't seem to be the kind of man to listen to
anyone's advice but his own."

"You are not wrong about that," Jynrek said with a sigh. "I rather hoped
you might have more influence than I do. I suppose the best I can do for
now is keep an eye on him, and encourage him to be reasonable."

"I'd intended to do that anyway." R'syl said, rubbing the back of his neck
thoughtfully. "But if you could warn me if he does show signs of wearing
out, I'd appreciate it. I may or may not be able to persuade him to cut
back, but I _can_ control what he does on duty with me." To an extent. It
would be more difficult to negotiate duties with a 'second than with other
staff, but he was certain that he could do something if necessary.

"Of course. And if you ever need anything--" He cut off as an apprentice
knocked on the door and stuck their head in. "Journeyman said to tell you
Sharevah's ready to see visitors now."

"Thank you." When the door closed, Jynrek smiled. "As I was saying, if you
need anything, please do just let me know. Otherwise, I'll let you see to
your rider."

"Thank you, Weyrhealer." R'syl said, standing and holding out his hand.
"I'll certainly keep that in mind."
