Yara chuckled quietly as she watched the little brown
firelizard playing in the waves. Having finished the
onerous task of cleaning her equipment she had come
down to the water to work on replacing the bindings on
her fins. Watching the handsome little brown flit had
proved more entertaining, however.
Laram sat in the sand with his toes dug in. He was
working on his studies to become a journeyman and was,
hopefully, getting fairly close. He jumped when he
heard someone near him chuckle. He whirled around,
noticing the girl behind him. She looked vaguely
familiar, however he just couldn't place her. "Hello,
I'm Laram," he said, turning red. He
didn't like to be surprised and certainly not by women
he didn't know. Numbweed flew to his shoulder and
nestled down, eying Yara with a suspicious air.
"Oh, I'm sorry," Yara apologized realizing she had
disturbed the little brown's fun and possibly
interrupted the man's studies. "I'm Yara, and I
didn't mean to spoil his fun. He was so adorable
playing in the waves."
Laram reached up to rub Numbweed's eye ridge. "It's
ok. He's just a little shy around people he doesn't
know. Are you new here to the Dolphin Hall?"
"Yes, I am. I transferred from the Northern Hall," she
replied with a smile. "And yourself? How long have
you been here?"
"Well, I've been here for almost 10 years now,
although I grew up on the coast and with the dolphins.
Hopefully I'll be walking the tables
soon and becoming a Junior Journeyman. Actually, I
was working on my studies when you came down," Laram
replied. This was probably the longest sentence he'd
ever said to any one person at a time.
"What are you studying?" Yara asked the blond haired
young man.
"Well, I would like to do my specialty in the
cartography, geology and meteorology area, but I'm
waiting until I get to journeyman status to
really dig into that field. Right now, I'm focusing
on my basic studies. I can't wait to move on to my
journeyman status. I think it would be so wonderful
to have a dolphin partner, but I do have Numbweed
here. I wouldn't want him to get jealous. What is
your specialty in?" Laram was beginning to warm up to
Yara, she seemed like an easy person to talk to.
"Well, I'm looking at specializing in the more medical
aspects of our Hall, and the more I study the more I'm
leaning towards advanced dolphin care," Yara explained
enthusiastically. Laram seemed like the type who
appreciated studying towards a goal and she was
enjoying his company.
"That sounds really interesting. And, as I can see by
your knots, you're a journeyman. How long have you
been a journeyman?" Laram thought this girl looked
around his age, so maybe she was just recently walked.
"Nearly four turns," she replied. "My parents were
both dolphineers, so I got an early start," she
explained.
"Wow, that's great. I wasn't fortunate enough to grow
up with dolphineers, but I did grow up near the ocean
and pretty much shadowed the dolphineer stationed at
our hold when I was young. Dolphins have always
fascinated me simply because they are so smart and are
so capable," Laram replied. "So do you have your own
dolphin yet?"
"You just hit on my greatest desire," Yara laughed.
"I really want a dolphin partner. I know it doesn't
happen for every journeyman, but I'm hoping it will
for me."
Laram laughed also. "Me too. I've already got
Numbweed, but I would love to have a dolphin partner.
Besides, I don't think Numbweed would mind having
someone to swim with or play with."
"He seemed to enjoy playing in the waves quite a bit.
Does he enjoy the dolphins?" Yara asked, indicating
the little brown.
"Oh yes. He's always showing me which dolphins he
played with and what they did all day while I was in
classes or training," Laram replied and rubbed
Numbweed. "It's nice to have someone to talk to that I
don't get tongue tied around!"
"I wouldn't have guessed that was a struggle for you,"
Yara had noted that Laram seemed shy, but he had
carried on so well. "I've quite enjoyed our time
talking. I would love to hear more about your time as
an apprentice here. I'm curious how the instruction,
or perhaps just the instructors, differ from the
Northern Hall."
"Oh well, you're just easy to talk to," Laram said and
blushed. "I'd be more than happy to tell you about it.
Do you want to meet for dinner and I can tell you
then? As you can see, I've got to get this studying
out of the way."
With a nod the journeywoman lifted the fins in her
hand, "Yes, and these bindings aren't going to replace
themselves. I'll see you at dinner, Laram."
