Yara smiled as she saw the untidy mop of blond curls emerge from the water. She couldn't believe Laram had beat her down this morning. They had started meeting for a morning swim when duties and studies allowed.
Though Yara had observed that the apprentice was indeed generally shy around others, Laram and she seemed to have developed an almost instant rapport. He was quickly becoming one of her best friends at the Hall.
Grinning she called, "You're early this morning."
Laram looked up as he was coming out of the water and noticed Yara. He blushed a bit as he grinned over at her. "Morning Yara. Sorry I beat you out here this morning. I woke up and couldn't go back to sleep, so I figured I'd come out and start. You coming in?"
"Absolutely! And no apologies necessary." Yara's long legs waded into the surf and she was quickly at a depth to dive in. When she surfaced she was right next to her friend. "Any reason for the trouble sleeping?"
"Not really. I've been working lately on my rescue and salvage techniques. I think that may be the reason why I haven't advanced on to the journeyman level. I tend to panic when I get under there. However, I spoke with Journeyman Renner who has been giving me some tips and techniques to try to get passed it. I guess I've just been obsessing a bit," Laram replied and grinned.
"Well, don't do that," she admonished splashing water in his face. "You are a good student with excellent skills. You'll be walking the tables anytime now."
Laram laughed and blushed. "Yeah yeah yeah, I know, I know," he said, "but don't splash me!" Laram ducked under and grabbed Yara's ankle, quickly pulling her under.
Yara wiggled free quickly after being dunked, dove down and then resurfaced only to offer Laram another larger splash. "You deserve to be splashed when you obsess over over things that you shouldn't."
Laram gaggled. He'd been laughing at his own cleverness when Yara surprised him and splashed him. "Hey, are you trying to drown me?" he sputtered. "If so, I'm afraid there will be severe consequences."
"Oh, I don't doubt that!" Yara laughed. "But I'm willing to stop as long as you promise not to be so hard on yourself." She kicked back and did a few backstrokes. Then circled back around to her friend.
Laram rolled his eyes and grinned at Yara and floated along in the water with her. He happened to like Yara a lot and was getting to be pretty good friends with her. In fact, she was the first girl he'd ever really had the courage to talk to. "Fine, I'll be a good little boy," Laram said and laughed.
"Were you ever anything, but?" Yara teased rolling to accomodate a gentle sidestroke. Laram was so quiet with anyone else, she just coulddn't picture him ever getting into trouble.
Laram started treading water and shrugged. "Not really. I think I've always been too quiet to get into trouble. Also, I've never really had any desire to do anything troublesome!" Laram said and laughed. Yara was the only person close to his age that had seen the true him. She accepted him even if he didn't talk to anyone else and liked to keep to himself.
Yara chuckled, "I thought as much. I never cared to be particularly troublesome, but I guess I found my fair share."
Laram smiled. He couldn't picture Yara ever being a troublemaker or being involved in any kind of mischief, but who knew with some people. "So how are you fitting in here? Do you like it?" he asked.
"I think I'm fitting in rather well and I like it a great deal. I'm thinking the transfer was a very good thing for me," she stated seriously.
Then in a more jovial tone she added, "There was no one up North willing to get up early and swim with me."
Laram laughed and blushed. "Yeah yeah yeah, you're lucky I'm such a good friend then."
"Yes, I am, and since you are such a very good friend, I'm sure that you are going to give me a dragonlength headstart on the race we're about to have!" the Journeywoman teased knowing that would be a totally ridiculous and unfair advantage.
Laram laughed. "You wish!" He said and started furiously swimming, glancing over his shoulder to see if she was following him.
She was after him before he finished talking so when he looked back she was coming up on his right. So focused on her friend, Yara was startled when a sleek body swam in close keeping pace. The dolphineer grabbed the fin with a laugh. It was cheating, but she knew her friend would appreciate the humor of the situation. That was one of the things she loved about Laram.
"Ooof," Laram said as he went under in the wake of Yara and the dolphin.
He came up laughing and choking on water at the same time. "Figures they'd help you! And I lose, yet again. I'll beat you one of these days, though," he said, grinning.
Yara gave a fond caress to the dolphin and a wide smile to her friend.
"You will, but then half the fun is lost. What will be your next conquest after that?" she she asked her grey eyes sparkling with merriment.
Laram suddenly blushed and stammered. "Uhm, well, uhm, nothing really."
He dove underwater to cool his hot face and gather his composure. When he resurfaced, he looked like he was more in control of his thoughts. "I don't have any conquests planned for the moment."
"That's too bad. Conquests add a certain excitement to life," Yara responded with a pleasant but neutral tone, her meaning left ambiguous
