past and present.
Location: Garnet Valley Hold
Date: month 4, day 13 of Turn 4
With a heavy sigh, Jilynn allowed the letter to fall to her lap as she
looked into the orange flames of the fire and immediately felt comforting
hands on her shoulders.
“She’s not any better?”
“No, in fact she’s some worse. They are looking to send the children away.”
“Surely her husband-“
Shaking her head Jilynn’s look was sad. "He’s not dealing well, and the
children were never his strong point.”
“I suppose she’s lucky that you have such an extended family.”
“She is hoping to get them out of the Hold. My youngest sister wants to
give her children an opportunity that she didn’t have.”
“Is she wanting us to take them?” Greaydon asked brightly. He always had
been fond of children.
“She’s asking that, yes,” Jilynn answered as a smile curled at her lips.
“It will be nice to have little ones about again.”
Jilynn took her husband’s hand and kissed it. How like him to assume the
responsibility so readily. He was such a good man. His rough and
unsightly exterior held one of the most caring hearts she had ever
encountered.
“Are you sure?”
Greaydon circled around and lowered to one knee so that he could take his
wife’s face into his hands. His beautiful wife. There was not a day of
his marriage that he wasn’t amazed that, of all the potential suitors, she
chosen him, “Do you really have to ask?”
She kissed him gently, “No, I suppose not.”
He returned her kiss and then turned and sat in front of her, watching the
fire while she started to massage the muscles of his neck and shoulders.
They often spent the latter part of their evening this way, just relaxing
together.
As they sat in companionable silence, Jilynn was thinking of her family
and her childhood. She had had such ambitions and dreams as a girl and in
many ways those had been recognized. Excelling as a cook and getting out
of the small cothold had been her first goals. Those she had recognized
early in her life. Then she had hoped to gain a position of leadership,
and she supposed running the kitchens might count. If she were honest,
she had truly dreamed of aspiring to a titled position, but somehow, once
she had married Greaydon, her priorities had changed, and for the better.
One did not have to have all of your childhood dreams come true in order
to lead a happy and successful life. Jilynn was more than pleased with
the paths her life had taken and knew that her life was better than the
dreams she had had for it.
