"I'm supposed to give you this," K'deren put the neatly written note on the desk in front of the wingleader. "But I'm guessing you can see the problem," he continued, waving his bandaged hand around.
The dark-haired bronzerider glanced at the note and handed it back to the brownrider. Since it was his policy not to allow paper or hides to gather on his desk he found it useful to give them back to the person who brought them, thus encouraging everybody not to bring such things near his desk in the first place. "What happened?"
"Well, I took Deralie to see some kittens, and she wanted to pet them.
She wanted to stroke the one that wanted to stay with its mother, so I picked it up to give it back to its mother and I found little, sharp teeth in my finger!"
"A _kitten_ did that? Kept my Wingsecond off full duty for two days?"
"It was a indeed a kitten," K'deren looked a little sheepish. "Didn't even get to see whether it was male or female, but I hear there was some wild felines in it's ancestry." He looked at his finger again, "I think the healers are being over cautious, but it was a nasty bite."
"Wild felines," K'hetah said, laughing. "Did somebody tell you that after you were so savagely attacked?"
"Well it was a rather ferocious little thing," K'deren could begin to see the funny side of it. "I mean there I was trying to give it back to it's mum, and it decided my finger was tasty. Even Deralie laughed, until she saw I was bleeding. The healer thought it might have come close to a blood vessel or something."
"Yeah, I bet there was a lot of blood. And none of it the kitten's!
Did your healer wash the wounds out well? Those little kitten teeth are good for starting infection."
"She did, she cleaned it up, and it's got a stitch or two in it as well.
I'm to go back daily to get the dressing changed and for them to check it. But I suspect that this time next sevenday I'll be laughing about this too."
"If everybody else laughing about it doesn't ruin your sense of humour first. Get them to put a smaller bandage on it when they release you for full duty because you aren't going to be able to catch firestone like that. Do you want me to just get along without you or try somebody else in the Wingsecond spot for drills?"
"Might be an idea to try out one of the younger bronze or brownriders.
Get them used to the idea that they might be doing it for real some day.
I'nec maybe or L'det both of them are quite steady riders and could do well up there."
"Not K'ran?" the Wingleader asked, naming a bronzerider older than the two men mentioned.
"He's not been here at Dolphin Cove too long. Those two impressed here and just have more of a feel for the wing. K'ran might be right in a turn or so, but he still doesn't know everyone in the wing yet."
K'hetah smiled, not at all offended by his Wingsecond's honesty though he asked: "Would you say the same about me?"
"Possibly, but you came in with experience of leading, K'ran transferred here as a wingrider, and his record said that he was a wingrider also at Dragonsfall."
"Fair enough. L'det, then. I'nec next time you decide to wrestle a wild feline."
"Which hopefully is a long time away."
"We'll see." The bronzerider opened a drawer and pulled out a sheaf of papers, then leaned back on his chair until his shoulders touched the wall behind him. "You tell L'det everything he needs to know and we'll see how he goes in drills tomorrow."
"I'm sure I can manage that without doing any more damage to my hand."
"And then - while you're on restricted duties - I have a few small hidework jobs you can do for me." The bronzerider grinned. "Will the sore hand be able to manage that, do you think?"
"How did I know that would be coming?" There was a wry expression on the brownrider's face, "I think I can just about manage that."
"Good." The Cyclone Wingleader rocked the chair upright and extended the papers across the desk. "Here you go, K'deren. Enjoy."
