Someone to Talk To

Writers: Kaysea
Date Posted: 12th March 2008

Characters: Causton, Misara
Description: Causton is concerned about Misara and her none crafting
Location: Vintner Hall
Date: month 9, day 4 of Turn 4

"Come, walk with me, we need to talk." Causton spoke quietly to Misara as he hooked a hand under her elbow. "I expected to see you up at the Hall within a day or so, but it's been more than a sevenday since I saw you here, and you have yet to come and see me." He didn't speak harshly to his sister, but he was firm in his disappointment. "Geni and the children are here now, and she too wishes to see you – and your children."

Misara glanced around at the almost empty Tavern, "I do have work as well you know, and I can't very well say I have an appointment with the Hallmaster, now can I?" she asked. "It would bring up all sorts of questions, questions I'm not prepared to answer – or capable of doing so right now."

"You haven't told anyone – still? Not even Bhervehan?" Causton asked, in mild surprise. "I thought you may have confided in him at least, he seems a reasonable man." He walked her over to the doorway and reached up, unhooking his coat from the rack beside the door.

"Which one is yours?" he asked, his hands glancing across the array of heavy coats that hung there. She nodded as his hand landed on a deep red cape, and he quickly unhooked it, and held it for her to gather around her.

"He probably would understand, but I don't feel the time is right – not right now" she replied in answer to his question, "He has been good to us, to _all_ of us, and I don't want him thinking he has been betrayed or tricked. Not by me or my actions."

"I can understand you wanting to keep quiet and I agree you should while you remain at the hall –"

"While I remain here? I _am_ staying Causton." She stopped and pulled her arm from his hand. "You can banish me from the Hall, but then you would have to think of a good excuse to do so. Questions would be asked…"

"Misara!" his exclamation was genuine. "Why on Pern would you think I would want to banish you?" He shook his head, baffled to her reaction.

"Embarrassment, awkwardness, the list is endless for reasons you would want to rid yourself of me." She counted them on her fingers. "But I won't leave, this place is the closest we have had to a home since Treast and I lived in the north."

"You and the children are welcome to remain here for as long as you wish – or as long as it is safe to do so." He said, alluding to her crafting. "Are you sure no one suspects?"

"Well unless I have talked in my sleep – no one should be aware." She replied caustically, regretting the tone, almost the instant the words were out of her mouth. "I'm sorry Causton, its just… its so _hard_ - holding it in as a secret."

It was on the tip of his tongue to ask if she and Bhervehan had a relationship - her words had given him cause to think so, but he wasn't sure. How would she react if he did? Realistically it wasn't his business, better to let sleeping dragons lie.

"You miss it, don't you?" he asked, changing his train of thought, knowing in himself how much he would miss not being able to practice his craft – something Geni had had to do for turns now, as well. She alone would have the best idea of what Misara was going through. "You need to come and talk to Geni – now – " he said, "- please?" his voice softened at this last word.

With a nod, Misara slipped her hand into the crook of his arm. "I think I should." She agreed. Maybe with Causton's wife, she could really unburden herself, as she hadn't done since she had lost Treast; Causton was trying to do his best, but he really didn't understand – she could see that now.
