Notes: Takes place after "Visiting Again"
"Journeyman Raistinor!" Causton raised his arm and waved the journeyman
over to him. "You're back, I see." In fact he had been warned of the
journeyman's return by his sister the evening before. Misara still
held doubts that the journeyman would keep her secret, so had warned
Causton of his presence at the Hall, again.
"Hello Master Causton." Raistinor crossed over to draw near the other
Vintner, holding his hand out in greeting. "Yes, I'm back for a few
sevendays. How do you fare?"
"I'm doing well." Causton nodded, "How went your assignment?" He
couldn't remember whether it had been an assignment or for personal
reasons that the man had been passing through. His head had been
foggy this last few days, he wished he could have a little more
clarity.
"Actually, it wasn't so much an assignment as visiting." Raistinor
explained, then cleared his throat. "Actually, sir, I was on my way
here to see you."
"Oh, you were?" Causton eyebrows rose in query. "Ho-" he choked
slightly on the word, "How can I help you?" he asked finally, after
clearing his throat.
"I was interested in requesting a transfer." Raistinor explained, "And
I was hoping you could find room for me here."
"Oh?" Causton's eyebrows rose in surprise. "I can always use another
vintner. But can I ask first, why?" He waved the journeyman in ahead
of him, into the office, and proferred the seat before his desk.
"Please, sit down. Would you like something to drink? Klah? Fruit
juice? Water?"
"Water, please." Raistinor leaned back in his chair, "My brother and
his family moved down here. My parents are gone and really, they're
the only family I have left. I'd like to be near them if I could."
"I think that can be arranged." Causton nodded, "Providing your Hall in
the north is accommodating." He searched the bench behind him, and
withdrew a copy of the required paperwork. "We'll need to fill this
in, and then I'll have it sent to your Hall. You'll have to return
there as well, and await your transfer. It'll give you time to pack
your belongings, if nothing else." he smiled, entering his own details
onto the form as the Hallmaster. "Will you be returning by boat, or do
you have a relative in a Weyr?"
"My brother has a brother in law at the weyr." Raistinor nodded his
head in the direction he thought the weyr stood. "He's already said
he'd help me with the move." The younger man leaned forward and slid
the paperwork closer to him. "If you'll let me borrow a pen, I'll
fill this out now."
"Certainly..." Causton picked up one of his pens and passed it across
to Raistinor, pausing for a moment before releasing it. "I need to
ask your cooperation, when you finally settle in here." he began.
The tone of the Master's voice caused Raistinor's eyebrows to shoot up.
"Sir, what is it you would have of me?"
"About my sister... Misara?" Causton said cautiously.
"Ah." Raistinor leaned back and smiled a little, "What about your
sister? The only thing that I know about her is that she is a kind and
endearing woman, just what a proper Southern woman should be."
"Yes .... er..." he paused for a moment, determining Raistinor's
meaning, "... yes, she is." Causton's answering smile carried to his
eyes, which also held his gratefulness to the journeyman. "I see you
have met her already."
"Yes. She's a fine woman." The smile faded and Raistinor shook his
head. "A sharding shame. Never the less, I'll do nothing to
compromise her well being."
"Thank you." Causton nodded. "Well, if you like we can send the
application for transfer off this afternoon, unless you would like to
take it with you, when you return?"
"I won't be returning for another sevenday at least." Raistinor
finished filling out the form then slid it back to the Master. "It
will probably get there before I do if you go ahead and send it."
"Consider it done." Causton's face broke into a smile as he stood from
the table. He reached across and shook the journeyman's hand warmly.
"We should hear, one way or the other, by the end of the sevenday, I
would say." He had seen transfers happen within days, but only from
one hall to another on the same continent, surely a sevenday would be
enough for approval, unless there were outstanding issues in the
Northern Hall.
"Then you might get the word as I'm on the way back." Raistinor shook
his head. "I shall simply plan on having the transfer being approved
and act accordingly. I'll make sure to start packing as soon as I get
home."
"I'll look forward to introducing you to the rest of the staff."
