It had been almost a sevenday since the accident and the loss of Cyritahn had made him numb inside. It took all he had not to cry in front of his children who looked to him for comfort. He decided to take some time to visit O'dan Br'nick had heard what had happened, but he wanted to see the bronzerider for himself.
The infirmary was full of riders who were injured in varying degrees. Most of them would be able to fly the next Threadfall, but some, like O'dan, might never fly again.
He wondered what he could have done to help if he hadn't let his anger towards Cyritahn drive him out of Dolphin Cove for so long. Would it have made a difference or would he have gotten himself injured or possibly killed?
He followed the healer to the former Weyrleader's room and entered quietly in case the rider was sleeping. He kept his face as neutral as possible since he knew that shock was the last thing that O'dan needed to see. He had most likely seen it on enough faces by now and Br'nick wanted the visit to be a friendly one not pity filled.
O'dan was awake, if a little groggy. "Br'nick... did you come all this way to visit?"
"I'm transfering back, remember? With the need for ablebodied riders, I was told to come back early." Br'nick said his voice light and cherry as he could make it sound. He didn't want to tell the bronzerider what had really brought him back sooner than they had planned.
"Ahhh. Well it's good to see you." O'dan tilted his head towards the chair next to his bed. "Have a seat."
"Thanks. How're you feeling?" he asked as he took a seat.
"I can say I've been better." O'dan smiled. "I suppose that rather goes without saying, though."
With a soft chuckle, the bronzerider nodded, "I suppose it does. Have you seen my newest sons?" he asked changing the subject to something cheerful.
He adored his two infant sons and was glad to be nearer to them as well as his other children.
O'dan shook his head. "I don't think I have. You'll have to bring them to see me."
"I will do that. They're adorable, but what parent doesn't think their children are cute?" he replied with a soft chuckle.
"Have you seen my oldest boy?" O'dan asked in a proud voice. He'd never paid much attention to his children, but being trapped in the infirmary where Odarian was an apprentice was giving him a chance to get to know him a bit better. "He's been helping out in the infirmary. And it looks like he's going to be a charmer."
"I think I've heard my oldest daughter mention him a time or two. Nicosia's a healer apprentice with hopes of Impressing one day."
"Odarian says he doesn't want to Impress," O'dan admitted, shaking his head a little. "I was a little disappointed, but I suppose it's understandable.
And we'll always need healers."
"She's stood a few times now, but hasn't gotten to the point of giving up yet. At least she's being realistic and doing something that she can continue if she doesn't Impress. As long as there are people, there will be a need for healers and at some points more than others for sure." Br'nick replied.
"Yes, that's true." O'dan shook his head. "I don't know much about being a father, to be honest. I'm only just getting to know Odarian."
"I've been near most of my children since they were born and I still don't know all that much about being a father. I think just being there for them is a big step in the right direction."
"Well, maybe I'll ask you some advice from time to time then," O'dan replied. "If you don't mind, that is."
"As long as you know it's not always tried and true, I don't mind." he replied with a chuckle at the thought of giving advice on the subject of being a father.
"Well, it's better than anything I've learned from experienced," O'dan assured him. His grin was fading a bit, the pain of being awake and alert starting to take its toll, but O'dan was so lonley that he didn't want Br'nick to see decide to leave.
"I'm not tiring you am I? The healers wouldn't like that at all." Br'nick asked noticing the slight change in O'dan's expression. He had become rather good at reading expressions after turns of being around his children and women.
"No... well, yes." O'dan smiled and rolled his eyes. "I get tired easily...
but I get tired of laying here with no one to talk to, too. But I suppose I should let you get back to work..." O'dan had never imagined he'd be saying the word 'work' with a wistful tone!
"I'll stop by tomorrow, if you'd like?"
"I'd like that," O'dan replied with a real smile. "I'd like it a lot!"
"Then I'll see you tomorrow." Br'nick replied with a smile. He was glad to be home again where his immediate family resided and not the family he was born into. Dolphin Cove was his home and always would be.
