Description: Ednan's firelizard egg hatches.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 12, day 14 of Turn 4
Trellyn felt a vibrating hum against her neck a moment before Carry, her gold firelizard, roused from her shoulder perch and launched into the air. She saw her heading towards the kitchen and realized Ednan's egg was about to hatch. She'd known it was going to be any day now so she'd memorized Ednan's schedule to she'd know where he was when the time came. Of course he'd be in the water.
She raced to the dock and saw the class out by the breakers, obviously working on some sort of partner skill with the dolphins. She gave a loud whistle but there was no response, so she gave the Dolphin Bell a loud ring with the Report code. It was more urgent than Come, but less so than Emergency. A silver head popped up almost immediately with the clicks of interest- he was going to get to play a fun game. "Go get Ednan, out by the breakers." she pointed, emphasizing Ednan incase he tried to bring back the instructor, "bring him as fast as you can."
"Eddnann, will do," the dolphin whistled and dove under the waves. He speed swam where the apprentice was practising. He popped his nose out of water middle of something and got scolding clicks from older female that was being Ednan's training partner. He simply ignored it and nudged Ednan: "Musst come, now. Fasst."
Ednan realized instantly what it was, the egg! He quickly excused his partner and the journeyman instructor (who looked more than little annoyed). He took a firm hold of the back fin. "How fast you can swim back to the docks with a passenger?" Ednan asked the dolphin with challenging tone.
"Me fasst n strong," the dolphin boasted. And he was, they probably broke some records with their speed. When they reached the dock, Ednan let go of the fin, thanked his transportation and climbed up from the water.
"Hi, Trellyn, is it the egg?" He asked, voice full of excitement. He had been waiting for it to start hatching for days now.
"Looks like it, we'd best hurry." Trellyn kept up an easy jog with Ednan as they made their way to the kitchen hearth where the egg was waiting. If there had been any doubt, it had vanished when they had entered the room. Carry and a dozen other firelizards were perched in the windows, their hums echoing off the walls, and their eyes swirling in excitement.
The egg was rocking in it's sand filled container. Ednan received a bowl of meat and fish scraps from a kitchen worker. "You know, I have already names picked out for all five colours," he remarked, with a hushed tone. Somehow he felt like talking loud would spoil the atmosphere of the moment.
Trellyn smiled, two names were usually enough for most- one male and one female, but it didn't surprise her that he would have decided something special for each color. "Remember, you need to keep calm and think warm, reassuring, and loving thoughts."
Ednan nodded, his attention on the egg now. Cracks had appeared to it and they run all across the eggs surface. The rocking had come more violent. "Should I help it?" he wondered. **Come on, little one, you can push your way out.**
"It'll make it's way out, just give it encouragement." she replied warmly. Watching eggs hatch, either dragon or firelizard, was such a special time, like being present when a baby dolphin was born.
"Come on! There's food waiting," Ednan encouraged the hatchling, hold a meat piece near the egg. Perhaps the smell of the meat was all the hatchling needed. The egg shell shattered, sending pieces flying around. A dark, wet body stumbled forward, creeling commandingly. Ednan dropped the meat near his nose and had another one ready when he had gobbled it down. Three meat pieces later he was sitting on Ednan's palm and wolfing down a fish gut. It looked rather amusing when the firelizard sucked it in. Ednan gently dried his hide from the back to see the exact colour.
Trellyn looked up when she noticed that the humming had stopped. Several of the firelizards had left, but Carry and a few others were still perched in the windows, their eyes swirling happily as they watched the pair bond. "What are you naming him?"
"Brun. It sounds like brown but is spelled differently," Ednan said happily. He looked at Trellyn and wished he could kiss her but they had too much audience.
"It's a fine name." she agreed with a chuckle. "And he looks mighty sleepy." she added as she saw him lazily accept another bite of meat with his eyes already closed.
"He should be, with the way he ate," Ednan laughed. He lifted his flit closer to his face. "Welcome, little Brun," he whispered.
