"Morning I'lan, care for some more?" Sorsha held up a pot of klah in front of the bronzerider. "You'll want to be wide awake for drills this morning."

"Thank you," said the bronzerider as he stifled a yawn. "They put you on the kitchen rota then?"

She topped off his mug before answering. "Yes, for the next few days at least. Do you always have drills this early?"

"Sometimes, thread can fall at any time of the day, we need to be prepared."

Sorsha nodded in understanding and gave a wave as she readied to continue on. "Well, let me know if you need another refill before you leave."

"I will do, but surely you can chat for a moment before you move on?" he asked. "Have you settled back into the barracks okay?"

She hesitated and looked around the cavern. There wasn't much going on yet, so a few moments wouldn't hurt. She sat down across from the rider and set the pitcher on the table. "Just for a moment. Actually, I'm not in the barracks. The Headwoman was able to put Railen and I in a room of our own."

An eyebrow was raised in surprise at that, but the Headwoman knew what she was doing. "Lucky you," I'lan contented himself with saying. "I'd have killed for some privacy at times." If she'd been in the barracks, maybe, just maybe he'd have been able to find reasons to be around there and spend more time with her.

"Well, that part is nice. We wanted to be in our own place once we were married anyways, so now I don't have to move twice." She felt odd talking to I'lan about marrying Railen; but he'd said he wanted to be friends with her.

"But if you impress, you'll have to live in the barracks," he reminded her.

"But if I don't Impress, it seems odd to live apart for four turns." she countered with a smile. If she did Impress, it would be hard being away from Railen, but she knew it wouldn't be forever. "Are you going to be at the Hatching?"

"Of course," it was an automatic answer.

Sorsha nodded and looked down at her hands. He still made her feel stomach flutter sometimes, especially when he looked at her. "It'll be nice to have friends in the stands, my father might not get here in time. He's coming up on his ship, but sometimes there are delays..."

"I'm sure he'll be here on time."

"Well, we'll find out soon either way. The Hatching is only a few days off." She was both excited and nervous at the upcoming event. It might change her life forever, or just end up being another day.

"Got your robe all ready?" It had been a big moment for him picking up and trying on that robe for the first time.

"And my thick boots." She grinned. When she'd first stood she'd had sandals on and burnt her feet.

"You'll do just fine."

Sorsha gave another quick look around, but she didn't really want to leave. She'd missed just chatting with I'lan, without drama or guilt or the disappointment that she had felt with their last several conversations. "And you never know, maybe if I do Impress, we'll end up in the same wing? That'd be fun."

"Unless the little gold chooses you," he said with a smile, watching her face. "You could have anything then.

She blushed slightly, "Is it silly of me to wish for the gold? I mean I try not to; a little green will love me just as much as a gold, and I'll be able to fight thread even better. There's just something..."

"Every girl of candidate age here is dreaming of that gold walking up to her," I'lan said with some certainty. "And you'll all have an even chance on the day."

"It doesn't make it any less silly of a wish though." Sorsha replied and gave a little giggle.

"Only if you want it to be silly."

Sorsha gave a slight frown as she thought. "I don't want it to be silly, but I don't know if I'd be a good goldrider. I guess it's up to the dragon though. The important thing is that I'll be there if a dragon _wants_ me."

"And one of them will," he said, hoping it was true.

"You're sweet." Sorsha said grateful for the reassurance. She stood and picked up her klah pitcher again. "I'd better get moving, this klah isn't going to serve itself."

If only she thought more, ran through I'lan's head as he watched her move on to the next table. If only...
