Z'al had walked in to his weyr to find his weyrmate on the floor. She was bleeding and in a lot of pain. She turned a tear-streaked face on him. Her dragon bugled in distress. He took her to the healers. She was suddenly taken form his arms and he was quickly forgotten. They had left him standing in a waiting area while they tended her. He paced and worried for four candlemarks. He didn't know what was happening. Then his friend Jozia had come to him to tell him that Kirranna had had a miscarriage. Z'al's face went pale.

"I'm sorry Z. She lost a lot of blood. She is sleeping and should pull through but I don't think it a good idea for her to get pregnant again anytime soon. It looks like she was about three months along. I'm so sorry." Jozia shook his head. He knew it would be hard on his friend. Z'al loved his kids.

Z'al had just stood there. He didn't even hear that they were keeping her there for a few days to watch her. He had just walked to her side and sat there. He sat long into the night just staring forward. Kirranna had been happy to be pregnant again. She had just been getting ready to set up regular appointments. Then she had suddenly been restless and moody.. Then she had said she was feeling all right just that morning She hadn't even said she was in any pain. He had only left her long enough to go to drills. She was going to go to her own drills. He realized she must not have made it there. She had lay there for how long in pain. She had probably blocked the pain from her green. Unless it had just started as he was coming home. He would never know. Now they had lost a child. Their child. His child.

Suddenly Z'al couldn't sit still. He had to get away from the infirmary. He had to get away from Kirranna looking so pale and lost on a tiny cot in the corner of the infirmary. He had to get away form the thoughts he was starting to have. He needed fresh air. He needed room to grieve.. He ran from the room and out into the weyrbowl. Nyinth landed nearby and put his head down to his rider. His eyes whirled in sadness and anxiety. He enveloped his distraught rider in his love.

Z'al stood there weeping. He wept for Kirranna. He wept for his two children who would never know their unborn sibling. But, most of all, He wept for a small little child that would never have the chance to be loved.
