Barli walked along the darkened deck watching the flickering lights of the night stars and the play of the shadows on the shore as the Sungazer drifted along. She found comfort in the soft vibrations of the engine and the resulting creak of the aged wood. The stern mounted paddle wheel churned with a soothing rhythm. She was glad to be away from the noise and clamor of port for now. Generally, Barli thoroughly enjoyed port and interacting with the people there, but tonight she was pleased to be on the river.
She was relieved that all had gone well with the Lord Holder and that they could leave the entire messy business behind them. It gave Barli a great deal of satisfaction that Fog would have another chance at love and happiness. And Eliste, she really liked Fog's young wife. Barli was glad that the other woman's past could be put to rest. It was so much better to focus on the future. Relief for Xerxen was also foremost in her mind. Yes things could have gone so much worse and that was certain.
Turns End was around the next bend. This turn had been so full, with the return of Lineal, Jesten's death, and the addition of Eliste and her son. What would the upcoming turn bring? She could not possibly imagine, but she had high hopes.
Jezz was growing up so fast. Barli remembered perfectly the tiny baby that had been completely dependent upon her. Could that have been so long ago? Barli smiled as she thought of her bright, independent little girl. There would be much to teach her this turn. At six there were many things Jezz was now old enough to comprehend. Far more trouble that she could get into as well! That was part and parcel of course. Seeing Eliste's little one, sure made Barli long for another baby.
Was it possible that she might find love in this turn? Somehow Barli just could not believe that, and she would not marry again unless it were for love. Her mind drifted back to the handsome young riverman that she was to have married. Oh Cianan! Whatever happened to you? How she regretted waiting to be with him until they were wed! Nearly twenty turns later and she still lamented that. If only she had one night with him to remember. Barli had stopped her strolling, and now stared off into the night sky, feeling the breeze on her face and inhaling the scents of the boat and the river.
Chiding herself for her silliness, Barli moved forward on the deck. It was past time for her to be abed. She would regret her late night tomorrow if she did not get to sleep soon. She wanted to start piecing a new quilt if time allowed. After the appearance of Rahona's little Sunbow, she had an itch to start work on the Flit's Dance pattern. "Yes, I believe tomorrow will be a good day," Barli said aloud.
