Cosani

Cosani

"Hey Cosani." The early mornings were nothing new to Meledei who was used to rising at the crack of dawn to attend to the various animals that made their residence at the Weyr. The first order of the day - of every day - was to prepare meat for their lifemates. Meledei greeted her friend with a smile and, perhaps, an energy that was far too buoyant for so early in the day. "Sleep well?"

Cosani grunted in answer and kept chopping meat. She'd had to get up early enough as a Candidate, and now they had to get up even earlier.

}:Hurry up! I'm hungry!:{ Shalith watched her rider with whirling eyes.

Meledei sliced through the meat with practised ease. Slaughtering animals had been something she had done in the past, and while they didn't actually have to slaughter the animals for their dragons, they did have to cut them up. Elleth stood nearby watching her rider and licking her chops, though she was, thankfully, silent. She knew Meledei would feed her and she was doing her best to wait. "It will be so nice when they can hunt on their own, won't it?"

"Yes." Cosani had blood almost up to her elbows. It was gross, but Shalith's hunger was stronger.

"I've got another clean towel if you need it," Sorsha offered the girl nodding to where it sat next to a partially bloodied one on the floor. Roseth was almost done, her belly bulged, but she refused to act anything but ravenous.

"Thanks." Cosani grabbed a properly sized chunk and fed it to Shalith, who gobbled it down.

**Don't choke!** she warned.

}:I won't.:{ Shalith opened her mouth for more.

"Hey Meledei, Ri'len and I were thinking about going fishing for a bit on restday, do you want to come?" They'd talked about it since they came to the Weyr, but never seemed to find the time for it.

"Sure - if we have the energy!" Meledei grinned, tossing another piece of meat to her gold who snapped it up mid air. "Would it be okay if Cosani came too?"

"That's okay. I don't like fishing." Cosani said.

"Are you sure?" Sorsha asked as she looked at the girl, she was more than welcome, and it'd give her the chance to get to know her. "If you don't like pole fishing, my father left me my net, and net fishing is alot more active and exciting."

"Come on Cosani, it will be fun!" Meledei urged as she waved her knife toward the girl, though the gesture was more comical than threatening. "You _have_ to come! It won't be the same without you."

"I _don't_ have to come," Cosani said. "Fishing is boring." Since it was something boys did and girls weren't encouraged to do, she'd thought when she was younger that it would be fun. But when she went with some boys from a neighboring hold, she'd found it boring.

Sorsha shrugged, she didn't think fishing was boring at all, but to each their own she supposed. "If you change your mind, the offer is still there."

"Come on Cosani, _please_?" Meledei's voice lifted into a forced wine and she pouted, lower lip sticking out. "It will be fun if you let it!"

"Staring at the water for candlemarks and hoping a fish _might_ come along isn't fun." Cosani tossed more meat to Shalith, who was getting full.

"But we get to spend time together, that's the fun part." To each his or her own, but really, Meledei hoped Cosani would come. The girl needed to get out.

Sorsha stopped chopping, she could feel that Roseth was eating because the meat was being offered, not because she was hungry. "It's okay, really. Maybe next restday we can do something you're interested in?"

Cosani took a moment to answer. She was explaining what fishing was to Shalith. "Yeah, maybe." Maybe if it was just Meledei, she would have said yes, but she didn't know what to make of Sorsha yet.

"That's a good idea, Sorsha." Meledei complied, though she really wished Cosani would join them. "What _would_ you be interested in doing Cosani? We can plan it out for next time." Elleth was still hungry, so Meledei gave her a bit more meat.

Cosani frowned, thinking. Lately, all she really wanted to do was spend time with Shalith and sleep. "We could go exploring up the beach. I think the dragons would like that, too."

"That sounds like fun. Maybe we can find some seashells that will be worth making into something." Meledei grinned over at her greenrider friends. At least Cosani was willing to do something, even if it wasn't going fishing with them. The girl needed to do more with others and Meledei hoped she'd start coming out of her own shell.
