Something to Consider

"Uncle Barr?" Barli had to make her voice carry over the sounds of the engines. She certainly didn't see her crotchety uncle anywhere.

"He's not here right now, can I help you?" Glafir replied and asked.

"No, I'm afraid not. You don't happen to know where he is by any chance?"

"He went to look for some spare part from cargo-room," the young technician replied.

"Ah, well it isn't worth chasing him about, " she stated with a sigh. "So how have you liked your time aboard the Sungazer?" she asked Glafir with a smile.

"Yes, I have," Glafir replied and smiled. Here he didn't feel as outsider than on board Moonflower. On Moonflower, he was a hold boy who married one of their kind, but on Sungazer he was like anyone else from Moonflower.

"I'm glad. And working with my grumpy uncle hasn't driven you mad?" Barli asked with a laugh. Barr was well-loved but none could argue his temperament.

"No. He's not so bad after you get used to his gruffiness," Glafir said and smiled. "Besides he really knows a lot!" His eyes shone with excitement.

"I would put him against any engineer on the river," Barli stated with some pride in her voice. "He can teach you a great deal if you've a mind learn." Barli eyed the young engineer, wondering if he might have a mind to stay aboard. It was his young wife, after all, that had family ties to the Moonflower.

"Yes, it would be great to learn from him," Glafir replied thoughtfully.

"Though I've spoken with her on and off, I have not gotten a chance to ask out and out how your wife is finding her time aboard the Sungazer. Does she miss the Moonflower very much?" Barli queried noticing the young man's contemplative look.

"We have enjoyed our stay here.. Although she has family on Moonflower and she misses them," Glafir replied.

This didn't surprise Barli, since some of the Moonflower crew came aboard during the overhaul and some did not. "Well, keep in mind, if you feel there's more to learn from Barr, you are more than welcome to talk to Lineal about staying aboard the Sungazer. The two of you would be very welcome here."

"Thank's Barli. I will think about it," Glafir promised. It was certainly something he had talk with his wife.

"I am always in favor of at least considering something new. I'll be honest, as for myself, I can't see ever choosing to leave the Sungazer, but that certainly does not keep me from thinking about the wide world of Pern. I suppose that is why I enjoy the passengers so much."

"I've seen a bit of Pern, and I can say that few communities are so close knit than the river boat crews. It creates unique feeling of security."

"That it does," she agreed with a nod. "One of the draws to our way of life so far has I'm concerned. Others, though, feel a bit stifled by family."

"That's probably a personality thing," Glafir said.

"I'm sure it is. Well, I had better be off and back to work. Please Tell Uncle Barr that I'm looking for him."

"I will," Glafir promised.
