One Dance

Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 13, day 23 of Turn 4

Sorsha followed the voices and music coming from down the hall and found her way back to the Hatching celebration. The feast was long over, but the wine had been pouring freely and she'd had to disentangle herself from Ri'len (the name still seemed odd to her) in order to find a bathroom. She saw him talking in a group and decided to head over for some fruit juice to clear her head.

"Sorsha," said a bronzerider. "Well done."

"I'lan!" Sorsha said excitedly as she saw him. She'd wondered where he'd been hiding, she hadn't seen him all night. She reached out and gave him a quick hug. "Did you see me Impress Roseth? Isn't she beautiful?"

He returned the hug quickly. "She is a little beauty," he said. "You'll be good together."

"Oh, and did you see Railen!" Sorsha beamed, "He Impressed a bronze!"

"I saw," it was kind of non-committal, in a way I'lan had been hoping that Railen wouldn't get any where near the sands and not have any chance at all of Impressing.

Sorsha gave a mock frown, she could tell he was much less enthused about Railen. "You know, you two need to start being nice to each other. If we're to stay friends I can't have you thinking not nice things about my husband now can I?"

"Your... Sorsha, you can't be a dragonrider and be married. It, it can't be."

She waved it off as unimportant, her happy mood bolstered by the wine. "Oh I know I know. On hide our marriage was dissolved, but we don't care about that."

"And you won't be able to be together for a long while. Not while your dragons are so young."

"We know, we were in the class." They'd been told and told, they were prepared to be good. "Hey, can you do me a favor?" Sorsha suddenly had an idea as she saw Meledei talking with a group of girls.

"I can try."

Sorsha gave a little head nod in the girl's direction, "Can you dance with Meledei tonight? It's a real special night for her and I don't think she has anyone to partner with. Ri'len already said he would but I'm sure she'd be flattered if a handsome bronzerider asked her." she added the last part with a playful wink.

"If she wants me to."

Sorsha grinned, "Of course she'll want you too, I'm sure all the girls here would love it if you'd ask them to dance."

"Then dance with me." There, he'd said it.

The harpers had just started up a fast beat, surely Ri'len wouldn't mind her being gone a few more minutes. "Sure, one dance, then I've got to get back."

I'lan held out an arm, to lead her onto the dance floor. "I'm sure you are a far better dancer than I am."

"I greatly doubt it." Sorsha said with a laugh. "I've been at a small seahold all my life, you've had plenty of chances at the Weyr to practice at these fast dances." She just hoped she remembered all the steps!

"Well, how about we just see what happens?" I'lan began the dance with a formal bow, it was at least one he knew fairly well.

Sorsha reciprocated and took his hand as he spun her out to mingle with the other pairs as they circled the dance floor. She missed her mark several times but so did he and they just laughed it off and continued as best they could. Finally the harpers closed it out and Sorsha was left slightly out of breath but grinning. "Oh that was fun I'lan, thank you."

"You're welcome, greenrider," he replied, greeting her with her new title.

She saw Ri'len watching her from the edge of the dance floor and she grinned and waved. "I'd better go, I think Ri'len wants a turn. Have a good night, and don't forget about Meledei!"

"I won't." There were words left unsaid though, I'lan kicked himself as she left, he should have ended that sentence by telling her he'd not forget about _her_.
