K'deren

K'deren

"There you go," K'deren picked up his daughter and dusted her off, before pulling an handkerchief from his belt pouch to rub the tears from her face. "Trievan's bigger than you and he can run faster, but in a turn or two you'll be just as fast. At least falling over on the beach doesn't hurt as much as the Weyrbowl."

"You trying to take over my job, there Wingleader?" Anji pushed herself up from the sand and strode towards K'deren and his daughter.

"She'll be fine," replied the brownrider as he watched the youngster run off. "She just slipped on the sand." And he was right. The tears were gone as Deralie chased after her brother, who was waving at them.

"You'll put me out of work in no time." She smiled, "So, how have _you_ been?" she asked pointedly. Though she had seen the rider around the Weyr, with and without his children, she hadn't managed to talk with him in a few sevendays.

"Dealing with our interesting change in leadership." Of course that was what

everyone was doing. It was among the gossip going around that the Weyrwoman had known this particular rider at Dragonsfall, and that they had some sort of a history.

"I see..." though she really hadn't had much reason to think on it. As far as she was concerned, it didn't affect her as much as it did the riders in the Weyr. "You get on with him, alright?" she asked.

"So far." K'deren had seen several changes in leadership in the last few turns at Dolphin Cove. ""I've yet to see what he can actually do with the Wings."

"I'm not sure I follow?" she said, shaking her head and frowning slightly. "He's had experience as a Wing Leader, hasn't he?"

"Not so far as I've heard, not even as a Wingsecond."

"Oh?" her eyebrows rose a little in surprise. "I... I thought Weyrleaders always had some training in the position, even if the dragons do decide who is to lead..."

"Bronzeriders do in Weyrlinghood," he explained. "Sometimes the dragons just choose, so we will have to wait and see."

"You don't sound very confident?"

"We have to give him time." K'deren remembered the last unexpected change in leadership all too well. It had led to a disaster as far as the Weyr was concerned.

"I'm sure he'll do fine." Anji nodded. "And you, how have you been? No more run ins with felines, I see."

"Only the stuffed variety," joked K'deren. "Deralie is more than happy with a toy one for the moment."

"You've had a narrow escape then, haven't you?" she smiled, her eyes meeting his.

"From a feline," he replied. His eyes met hers and he smiled. "But it might not last for long."

"Oh?" she asked, "She has something else in mind, then?"

"Canine puppies. She saw one the other day and her fostermother said she was chasing after it just like she did the felines."

"Ah..." she nodded, a smile crossing her lips again, "I see. But at least you have one blessing..."

"I do?" he asked.

"You only have to watch the teeth on canines, their claws aren't sharp like a felines." She laughed softly.

Which in turn had the brownrider laughing. "I'm not sure which would be better, canine teeth, or feline claws."

"I'd take canine teeth any day, over a feline who can bite and scratch at the same time." She answered with a grin.

"Deralie will likely change her mind again over a pet, she's only little."

"It may be easier to start with a smaller pet; if, and when, you would like to get her one, come and see me, I have a few friends in the beast crafter caverns who would know what would be best suited to Deralie." Anything to
give her a chance to get to know both of them better, she thought to herself.

"Now that does sound like a good idea," K'deren smiled at the healer. "And if nothing else Deralie would have fun."

"Good!" her smile widened perceptibly. "Well, I really should let you get back to your family. Just keep what I said, in mind. I'm available...any time."

"I'll remember that," and he meant the words as he said it. There was something about the Healer, but quite what, he couldn't define.
