Finally it seemed that Carlan had played his last set, managing to squeeze in the song that had meant so much to him and Nikanna back at her Father's hold. His gitar was laid gently in his case which was fastened and placed somewhere secure, and then he made his way back to his wife.
Nikanna sat at the table, drinking a final glass of wine as she watched him approach. As he neared, she set the glass aside and smiled up at him. "So are you finally all mine?"
"For whatever you desire," he teased. "No more gitar playing tonight."
She feigned a look of shock. "What? I've won out over the gitar for once? Are you sure you're well?"
"I'm perfectly fine," was the retort. "Maybe later I'll just have to show you how 'well' I am."
"I'm definitely interested in your proof," she replied. "So what are our plans for now?"
"Well, I thought about some food, and some more dancing. I'm sure I can find someone to share that with." He smiled at Nikanna. "You will join me, won't you?"
She paused as if in contemplation. "Well, I am a little hungry, so I suppose that I will."
"I think they made some of those little sweet pastries I know you like," Carlan said to her as he led her to where the food was laid out.
"The ones I always end up eating too many?"
"But tonight it doesn't count, it's about having fun and enjoying yourself."
"Remember that when I eat so many that you must carry me back to our rooms."
"Just so long as it is me that gets you there," he teased. "And when we do get there..."
She raised an eyebrow as she regarded him. "So you have plans to take us well into the new turn."
"Oh I do," and he turned to whisper in her ear. Something that had he said it to a woman not his wife could have been considered truly scandalous.
Nikanna smiled as she listened, a slight blush coloring her cheeks. "I don't think we should stay at this party for too long."
"But eat a little first, you'll need your strength," he teased as he lifted a platter with the aforementioned pastries and passed it to her.
"I certainly can't resist these," she admitted. She took on of the delicate pastries from the platter and bit into it, her eyes closing as she savored the taste, a droplet of berry juice showing at the corner of her mouth.
Carlan lifted a napkin, and gently wiped her face after putting the platter back down on the table. "I can see you're enjoying that."
"I'm enjoying every moment of this evening." She frowned slightly, looking down at the remainder of the pastry. "Not that I don't enjoy the time with Ryannae, but this is different."
"In a few turns she'll be old enough to join us." He smiled at her, "But for now, this is for us."
A wrinkle creased her forehead as she frowned more deeply. "A few turns and she'll be joining us, a few turns spent with us, and then we'll be having to keep watch to see who's claiming her time in the dances."
"Like I said, maybe we should go back to our rooms and make the most of this time," suggested Carlan.
"I'm all for that," Nikanna told him, dabbing at her mouth with the napkin as she rose to her feet.
"Shall we?" he said offering his arm.
"We shall," she stated, once again smiling brightly as she placed her hand on his arm.
