Rotten Smelling Flowers

Writers: AL, Cali
Date Posted: 4th March 2009

Characters: Meledei, F'gol
Description: F'gol questions the motives of the mystery flower giver.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 14 of Turn 5

Meledei arranged the flowers carefully on the tiny bedside table that was next to her bunk. It was hardly big enough to hold the bouquet, but it worked, if barely. She wondered who sent them. She had danced and conversed with so many people during Turn's end that all the faces seemed more a blur than anything. It was a sweet gesture, really, but Meledei wished that the person had said who he was. It was almost maddening trying to figure it out with no clues to the puzzle!

"Ready for lunch?" F'gol asked coming up behind her. He'd just finished feeding Tealth, and despite how full his lifemate was, he was famished.

"Hey F'gol." Meledei greeted as she finally turned away from her flowers. "Sure, lunch sounds good. I'm hungry!"

"You pick some flowers?" He asked, noticing them for the first time. When did the girl have time for that? "Looks nice there."

"No, I didn't pick them." Meledei shook her head and reached out to lightly caress one of the blossoms. "Someone sent these to me."

F'gol saw that she was pleased with the admission and wondered what it was with girls and flowers. "Your da?"

Meledei shook her head, and smiled a bit. "He didn't give a name, so I have no idea! But aren't they lovely?"

"Why would somebody give you flowers and not tell you who they are?" he asked confused, "Did you ask the person who delivered them?"

"I don't know." Meledei fished the scrap from where she had hidden it away and held it out for F'gol to read. "It's sweet, though, don't you think?"

F'gol looked down and read **The sweet scent of these flowers in nothing compared to the sweetness of the Weyr's newest Goldrider.** "That sounds like it came right out of a trashy harper novel."

The goldrider snatched the hide back. "You're just wishing someone had thought to send _you_ flowers." Meledei huffed as she stuck her tongue out at her friend. "*I* think it was sweet."

He felt a spike of jealousy in his stomach as he thought of the tune he'd written for Sheste, he knew it would impress her, just like whomever had sent the flowers was hoping to impress Meledei. "Well I think it's stupid. It's probably got mites in it or something."

"Well excuse me for having someone think I'm worth getting flowers!" Meledei's playful smile faded and an annoyed frown took its place. She shoved the scrap of hide back in its place, then turned and began to stomp toward the door.

"It's probably not even legitimate." F'gol called after her, annoyed that she was leaving. He'd waited for her for lunch hadn't he? "Somebody probably made it up as a trick."

"Why can't you just be happy for me?" Meledei asked, stopping at the door before she had gone through it. She turned back to glare at F'gol. "Why do you have to be so pessimistic about _every_thing? Someone does something nice for me and you just shoot it down, making it sound like it was stupid."

"Why do you have to be so naive about everything?" He threw back at her. "I'd have been happy if it had been from your da. But seeing how happy you are about this and not knowing who it's even from? I just don't want you to get tricked or hurt."

"You always have to think the worst about things!" Meledei snapped, quite irritated at the attitude that F'gol is taking. "Why can't you think that maybe, just maybe, someone DOES like me? Is that so hard to imagine?"

F'gol groaned. Why did she have to be acting this way? He just wanted to go eat. "No! It's _not_ hard to imagine, but if they were your friend then they would have left their _name_."

"Maybe they wanted to show their appreciation but are shy, ever think about that?" Meledei didn't give F'gol a chance to shoot back an answer. She flipped her hair behind her back and stalked out of the barracks. What was wrong with F'gol? So maybe they were playing her for a fool, but it _was_ nice to be noticed and no one else had given her flowers before! Still, maybe it was someone who was sincere. Oh, but not according to F'gol! Evidently no one would be sincere about her, would they?
