"I can't understand men!" Meledei flopped down on her bunk and heaved a sigh, staring up at the ceiling. "Or rather, a certain young man. Why does he have to be so...so....irritating!?"
"Who?" When Meledei had finally shown up to lunch, she'd been down right grouchy, but Sorsha hadn't had a chance to talk to her with all the people around.
"F'gol! He's insufferable!" Meledei rolled over to her side, glaring toward the door that led to the boy's side of the weyrling barracks. "He's a big...big wherry!"
Sorsha was surprised, Meledei always spoke very highly of F'gol and Sorsha herself thought he was a very nice if sometimes quiet fellow. "What'd he do?"
"He was being a flighty green, that's what he was doing." Meledei sighed and pushed herself up to a sitting position. "You know the flowers, right?" She nodded toward the bouquet which continued to sit on the tiny table. "That I don't know who sent them?"
"Yeah..." She drawled out, not sure she saw the connection, "Did he send them to you?"
"No, but he's making all sorts of theories and all of them _bad_." Meledei snorted and tossed herself upon her back once more. "It's like he can't imagine someone normal and _nice_ might actually be interested in me."
Sorsha frowned, "What sort of bad theories?"
"Well first off, he made fun of it, said the note was out of some trashy harper story." Meledei hadn't liked that description at _all_. "Then he said that the flowers probably had mites in them, then he said that someone probably made it up as a trick, like it's some horrible, evil guy out to get me."
"He sounds like a jealous boy to me." Sorsha said with a grin. Her brothers always acted like that when father would get her a present on his travels.
"Jealous maybe that someone's sending me flowers and paying attention to me and not him." Meledei wished he'd just grow up and be happy for her. It wasn't like the person was sneaking in something like numbweed with the flowers.
Sorsha shrugged, "Or maybe he's worried that you'll find somebody you want to spend time with more than him?" He didn't seem to have made many friends besides Meledei.
"That's silly." Meledei liked F'gol - when he wasn't being a big baby that was, and trying to tell her nasty things about the gift she had received. "I mean, if for some strange reason this person does come forward and for some strange reason I find that he's someone I'm interested in, I wouldn't just ignore my friends."
"Well then tell him that. Remember, boys are stupid. They need things spelled out for them." Sorsha wondered if friendship was _all_ that was going on between them, but kept that question to herself. If they weren't thinking about it, she wasn't going to put it in her mind.
"So it seems." Meledei wondered why it bothered F'gol so much. Yeah, he was concerned for her well-being and all, but Meledei thought he was truly over reacting. Did he think she was stupid? That she was so easily tricked? Yes, the flowers were nice, but she wasn't going to fall for someone just because they gave her presents. If anything, the mystery was intriguing. "Either spelled out or whacked upside the head at any rate."
Sorsha shrugged then snuck in a grin. "Whatever it takes!"
"I'll give that a try next time he annoys me." Meledei grinned right back. "Does Ri'len ever act that stupid?"
"Not really." Sorsha tried to think of a time when Ri'len acted anything but wonderfully, "But he's older. Maybe in a few turns F'gol will be a lot more mature."
"Yeah. And he's been groomed to be a holder so I guess he'd have to grow up pretty quick, huh?" Ri'len didn't seem the sort to be annoying - unlike F'gol. "Maybe he should give F'gol lessons."
"Or maybe you should just cut F'gol a little slack." Sorsha suggested with a grin. "If he gets too annoying _then_ we can put Ri'len on him."
"No no, I think we should do it now, before it gets worse." Shards, Meledei hoped it didn't get worse. Seriously, F'gol needed to lighten up.
Sorsha laughed. "Okay... but you ask Ri'len. I don't want to be the one that gets in trouble when the annoyance sets in."
"I can deal with that."
