Silly Thing

Writers: Jane, Paula
Date Posted: 25th March 2009

Characters: Varija, K'hetah
Description: Varija runs into K'hetah and his hat.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 5 of Turn 5

The bronzerider pulled on his silly hat - it would not have been quite so silly had he spent more time on its weaving for the lessons he'd been given in constructing such a head covering had been more than adequate - and stepped out from the comparative cool of the cliffs and into the blaze of afternoon sunlight in the Weyrbowl. He had harboured a hope that the earlier rain would have hung around but the clouds had obviously had other ideas and departed for places unknown.

"What is that thing in your head?" Varija asked when she passed the bronzerider. She was coming from the beach, carrying a satchel on her shoulder.

"A collection of dried leaves of a suitable long, narrow shape for weaving," the bronzerider admitted with a grin. "That plus a candlemark of my time in weaving them into something resembling a hat."

"Maybe you should have spent another candlemark on it," Varija suggested.

"Maybe I should have spent _at_least_ half a candlemark on it in the first place," he said, agreeing with her sentiment. "I'm K'hetah," he added in an effort to find out her name since he didn't recognise her.

"I'm Varija, green Attiath's rider. I'm new addition to this weyr," She introduced herself.

"I'm not that old an addition, myself," he said, holding out his hand to her. "Do you like it here so far?"

"Yes, I have. This place is full of interesting people," Varija said, taking his hand and holding bit too longer than was proper.

K'hetah's smiled as he extracted his hand. "Warmer or cooler than where you're used to?" he asked.

"Warmer, I came from the North," Varija replied.

"Me too, most recently," he admitted, touching the roughly made hat. "Hence I'm always trying to keep the sun off my head, unlike the locals who seem impervious to it."

"I like sun, but then I grew up near River Bluff and Impressed there," Varija replied with a flirty smile.

"How long have you been here? You're obviously not in Cyclone Wing - so where have you ended up?"

"Roughly about a month, and I ended up into a Hurricane wing."

"With the Weyrleader," K'hetah said with a smile. There were usually mixed feelings about the Weyrleader's wing. It was considered something of an honour, but something of a burden too, being under the watchful eye of the man in charge of the entire Weyr.

"Yes, with the Weyrleader, " Varija confirmed.

"Are you finding the Wing good to fly with?"

"There's nothing wrong with it, it's just a wing like any other," Varija said with an indifferent shrug.

K'hetah thought differently; to him each wing had a personality and some were significantly better to fly with - and lead - than others. A wing's personality could change over time with a change of personnel, but otherwise there was little that could be done to influence the established attitudes, whether they were good or bad. "Have you been in a few?" he asked with a laugh. Some people did get moved around more than others.

"Yes, " Varija replied curtly. Now, there was touchy subject she didn't want to dwell on.

K'hetah resisted the urge to laugh at the greenrider and instead said: "Perhaps you'll be more settled here."

"I do hope so," Varija's flirty smile returned.

"Welcome to Dolphin Cove, anyway Varija. It's been a pleasure to meet you."

"Thank you, sir," Varija nodded.
