The dining hall was quickly emptying out as holders and crafters
finished their noon meal and returned to work. Jadorin had been so
engrossed in a project he had not noticed his hunger until Tini had
practically dragged him from the loom chirping and sending images of
meatrolls. So, he was surprised to see Lymria still there, and
without any fosterlings. He took a seat across from her, quickly
handing Tini a bite of meat so the firelizard would behave. "Hi
there," he said, glad to have a friend to sit with, even if she did
need to leave soon.
"Hi, Jadorin," Lymria said and lifted her klah mug for him. It was
welcome change to get eat in peace, without bunch of children
demanding this and that all the time.
"Are you having a late lunch or do you have the afternoon off?"
Jadorin asked, giving Tini some more meat. Lymria was rarely
without a child or two and it was nice to see she had at least a
bit of time to relax.
"I have afternoon off. The children are all attending their friends
birthday party," Lymria said.
"That must be nice. Do you have plans for the afternoon?" He took a
sip of klah, wondering if he should let himself have more than one
cup.
"No, I don't. I was just planning to enjoy the peace and quiet," Lymria replied.
"Lucky," Jadorin said, pretending to be jealous. He smiled. "What
does peace and quiet mean to you? Sitting in the dining cavern?
Going for a walk? Taking a nap?"
"Reading a good book...anything that doesn't involve children," Lymria chuckled.
Jadorin nodded in agreement. He remembered growing up surrounded by
other children. Then, of course, it had not been his responsibility
to care for others. Since leaving the Hall, he saw many children from
a distance but, unlike Lymria, he had very limited interaction with
them.
"Don't take me wrong, I love those children, but they are with me
almost all the time," Lymria added quickly.
The weaver grinned. "I know I wouldn't have the patience to spend all
of my time with children. How often do you get free time?"
"Couple candlemarks in a day when Omrian is having a nap and the older
ones are in the class. Few candlemarks now and then, and I am lucky
whole afternoon once and a while. Being fostermother is a full time
job," Lymria replied.
"I believe it." Jadorin took a big bite of the vegetables on his
plate remembering that, unlike Lymria, he did have work to return to.
"I unfortunately don't have time off today, but I will be spending
some time at Dragonsfall Weyr in two days. That will be a chance to
walk around, or just sit and watch the dragons." He smiled, looking
forward to the change of scenery.
"That sounds like fun," Lymria said wistfully.
"Have you been to a Weyr before?" He did not quite understand her tone.
"When I was a child. The caravan where I grew up traded with the Weyrhold."
"Well, if you have a few candlemarks free in the morning in two days,
you're welcome to come along," he offered with a smile. "I just need
to drop off some finished commissions and then we could have an early
lunch before coming back."
Lymria's smile was bright enough to rival the sun. "I'll arrange it to
be free," she promised.
"Really?" He returned her brilliant smile. He had not actually
expected her to be able to come, but knew they would have a great
time. "Anything in particular you want to do at the Weyr?"
Lymria shook her head, "No, just general gawking around."
"We can do that." He took a last bite of the food on his plate. "I
need to get back to work now. Do you want to meet right after the
morning meal in two days?"
"Yes, I do. At the main doors?" Lymria suggested.
"Perfect." The weaver stood. "Get a good night's sleep tomorrow.
You'll need your energy." The Weyr was an overwhelming place, even
for those who had been there before.
"Sure, I'll see you then," Lymria nodded.
