Klegen came closer.
His hands reaching out for.
She was trapped.
Nowhere to run.
No escape.
No Marod.
She screamed as his hands encircled her throat.
Startled awake, he was halfway out of bed and reaching for a knife before he remembered where he was. The running, the hiding, the fear, that was all behind them. All except the memories ... and the dreams. "Royani!" Marod shook her.
"MAROD!!" her screamed and his shaking combined to wake her. She was drenched from fear, and couldn't stop shaking, his face had seemed so real. She clung to Marod, needing to feel him close to her. "Oh Marod...again..." she said, and burst into tears.
He held her, stroked her hair. "Shhhh ... it's okay."
"Will these nightmares ever stop? I saw him again, the...the way he was just before you..." she hid her face in his shoulder again, her body trembling with the last remnants of fear from the dream.
He couldn't help picturing Klegen in his mind, the image still sharp after the months that had passed. "They'll go away, in time." Although he didn't know that. Marod still had nightmares, too.
"I don't think I'll ever forget the way he looked at me... I've never felt so hated before." she shook her head still finding it hard to comprehend.
"I know. But he can never hurt you again. Never, ever." And Marod wouldn't let anyone else hurt her, either.
"Do you think they've found him yet?" she asked, not able to bring herself to say 'his body'. She wondered whether Boesyn had been found yet either, and whether he had survived long enough to be rescued.
"Possibly. But there aren't many people up there, and it might be overgrown." Maybe no one would ever find his body. It would just rot up there until it was nothing but bones, nothing but dust.
"Hopefully he's nothing but dust before someone goes up there." she nodded quietly into his shoulder. "It was self defense, but... who would believe us?"
"They would believe _you_."
"I don't know... but I wouldn't allow them to take you into custody. You saved me." she looked doubtful.
He stroked her hair again. "Don't worry. We're safe here."
She snuggled down against him again, his body warm and comforting. "I will always feel safe, as long as I as with you."
"And I'll always be happy, as long as I'm with you." He brushed her hair aside to kiss her cheek. "Sleep, my lady, and have sweet dreams."
Curling into his body and listening to the comforting beat of his heart, Royani felt herself slowly relaxing and growing sleepy again. With a softly murmured "I love you." she drifted off to sleep.
