Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 13 of Turn 5
It was evening at Dolphin Cove, and many people were gathered in the Dining Cavern listening to a small group of harpers and riders playing some music. A few couples were even dancing to the reels, and some were singing. All in all, a pleasant place to be.
K'deren was sat to the side, watching when he noticed a familiar figure wander past. "Anji," he called out. "Join me?"
"Oh - K'deren!" Anji's face split into a wide smile, "Sure..." she answered, as she stepped closer, and slipped into the chair opposite him. "You've a moment to yourself?" she asked, "And you're not dancing?"
"No," he said. "I'm not really one for dancing."
"Singing?" she asked, her smile not fading.
"Only if you want the room to empty faster than a trip /between/..." he joked.
"Oh, surely not..." she laughed softly. "Besides, I'm sure the noise in here would drown you out anyway." she said, her eyes meeting his.
"No really, how my brother and sister managed to apprentice as Harpers I don't know," he said with a laugh.
"Oh..." she pulled a face, "that bad, huh?" She looked around the tavern, then to the table and finally back at K'deren, "So, no dancing, no singing...but I noticed you still like a drink?"
"There have to be some pleasures in life, wouldn't you agree?"
"True. But drinking isn't the only pleasure, surely?" She had been longing to discover if he had a partner somewhere in the Weyr these days, but had been loathe to ask anyone, lest a rumour start. Tonight, tonight was different, she had had a drink and had become mellow following the evening meal, her inhibitions - well, they had dissipated with the evenings entertainment. Enough to probe a little deeper.
"I can think of a few," he said with a smile. "My children are one of them." That was a start at a conversation at least, but there was something about this healer, something perhaps that he hadn't felt since Vonalie. "Donneth is another," he tone becoming lighter, almost teasing, sensing she had meant other things.
"Of course, the children," she smiled warmly and genuinely. She could see the love for his children in his whole demeanour, whenever they were together - and really - his attachment to his lifemate went without saying. "I suppose... " she gave a small sigh, realising she would never be able to come right out with her question, "I suppose, really - that's enough..." she picked up the glass she had placed on the table earlier, and went to take a drink - then realised it was empty.
"Let me," he said as he realised her glass was empty. "Is red wine okay?" he asked while he pondered the nature of her words. there seemed to be some sort of unspoken question there, but what it was he was not quite sure.
"Thanks..." she felt disappointed in herself, but held out the glass, hoping K'deren wouldn't notice. She caught his eye for a moment as he filled her glass; and once again felt that light, fluttering in her stomach she had felt before in his presence.
"As for other pleasures," he continued. "There is always getting to know someone, and there are many ways to do that."
He almost took her breath away with his words, and her eyes met his once more, this time she looked for any sign of hidden meaning. "That's... very true." she answered, a smile tilting the corners of her mouth up again. "And...are you getting to know anyone else at the moment?" she asked, finally pulling the courage from within, to ask the question she had been dying to ask.
"Not right now," he answered softly.
The fluttering in her stomach increased as she took a sip of the wine, her eyes meeting his over the rim of her glass. Did this mean there was a chance that she and K'deren could get to know each other better? She hoped so.
"It can take a while to find a person you really want to get to know."
"And with the children, a little longer to get to know them, too, I guess." she replied, trying to keep her voice even. She was normally so confident, but there was something about K'deren, something she hadn't felt for a long time - that knocked her normal self confidence askew.
"But when you do find them, somehow you know that you want to find out more."
"You're right." she smiled softly, a brief flash of memory - the beginning of a relationship.
"It just depends on whether it is mutual or not."
"You see, that's where the problem's start - figuring out if it is mutual or not..." she gave a short laugh.
"But that can be part of the fun though, don't you think? The finding out?" suggested K'deren, a slow grin spreading across his face.
"Hmmm... I've seen others hurt doing it that way. Don't you think the children may have it right?" she asked, amusement in her voice now, she leaned forward, almost conspiratorially, "Anji likes you, K'deren, do you like her?" she asked in a high pitched, but hushed voice. Hoping he didn't miss that she had used them as the example - it hadn't been in vain.
He leaned forwards, coming close to her. "K'deren likes Anji," came the reply.
